Title: The Contract
By: Melanie Moreland
Publication Date: May 24, 2016
Genre: Romance
Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss. Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract — fiancĂ©e instead of PA. What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love? Sparks. That’s what happens. Can the power of love really change a person? Will they survive the contract? What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?

I sighed. That door was slammed so often, I had to get maintenance to rehang it almost every month.
Well, it seemed I now had a fiancé. I was engaged to a man who disliked me, but was willing to try to overlook it, so he could get a new job and piss off his old boss. Certainly, that was the stuff dreams were made of.
If you call me sweetheart, do I get to call you something, ah special, too?... Dick... It's a short form of our name, and it, ah, suits you, on so many levels.
You need a soul to love - and even an 'emancipated scarecrow' such as myself can see you don't have one.
I stared at her in wonder. Gentle didn't describe her soul. Not even close. I wasn't sure I knew a word that did.
When you get older, Richard, you realize life is made up of moments. All sorts of them. Sad ones, good ones, and great ones. They make up the tapestry that is your life. Hold on to all of them - especially the great ones. They make the others easy to take.
My Review:
What an odd pair! Richard was rich, caustic, viciously snide, her boss for the past hellish year, and an unrepentant jackass worthy of the name Dick. Katy/Katharine was sweet, thoughtful of others, already living on a shoestring and struggling to pay her bills, and her jerk boss was going to get her fired. Talk about a rock and a hard place! I was engrossed in this entertaining, well-paced, and creative story from page one. I enjoyed and savored Richard's gradual transformation from a total tool into a shockingly soft, romantic, and caring man. Katy must have sprinkled magic fairy dust around his apartment as he flourished and matured under her attention - personally, socially, and professionally. The writing was fun, humorous, insightful, observant, emotive, and plucked at my cold heartstrings. I adored the vibrant and complex characters as well as the clever banter and witty rejoinders. The Contract is the second book of Ms. Moreland's that I have been lucky enough to devour. I first fell into a deep fangirl swoon over her work during Over The Fence. More please.
