“He looked so elegant in his dark grey suit, so refined with the glint of diamond on his lapel. Why did someone so horrid look so beautiful? It wasn’t fair. Nature’s cruel irony. In jungles, birds died from being attracted to the gleam of cavernous flowers. In rainforests, snakes and omnivores succumbed to toxin-riddled jeweled frogs.Beauty was the ultimate arsenal. Beauty was meant to deceive. It was meant to trick and beguile so their prey never saw death coming.”“Coldness etched his gaze.Aloofness whispered from his posture.Calculation radiated from his every pore.I’d never been so intimidated or so intimately challenged.”
My Review:
I have no problem with BDSM, or consensual play between lovers taken to extremes with safe words, but I personally despise sadism and abuse. I am desperately hoping our Mr. Hawk doesn’t turn out to be a true sadist, but he is monster none the less. This book made me a bit uncomfortable, as I was afraid for our inexperienced and naïve heroine, who is essentially kidnapped into slavery and threatened with all forms of abuse, and ultimately death. Thankfully, since this volume appears to be more about setting the stage, the abuse wasn’t extreme, but the potential is there, and the story to come will undoubtedly walk the edge.
Oddly enough, there was no actual sex in this volume, although there was handling and fondling, as well as an unusual scene of serial licking as she served a group/gang of men dinner, which was then followed by a public display of Mr. Hawk’s oral skills. The general tone seemed to be more of preparing and tearing her down emotionally, so there was considerable humiliation, and repeated threats of sexual abuse, and obviously considerable plans for sexual slavery in the future. Our little heroine shocks herself in her self-discoveries, and finds a backbone at the oddest times, yet lacks one when she needs it. But, don’t we all?
The writing is descriptive and kept me involved, although I found I was often holding my breath, or taut and on edge. I frequently needed to take breaks while reading, to get a cool drink, take a breath, or unclench my jaw. I have never read a book quite like this before, so I am struggling to accurately identify the genre. The synopsis calls it an erotic romance… I guess I missed something as while our tender and nearly virginal little heroine started off hoping for a date, I didn’t see one iota of romance occurring on these pages… but maybe that will come later. A gal can always hope…
