Book Review: Recluse by Jaycee Ford

Title: Recluse
Series: Spider #1
Author: Jaycee Ford
Genre: Romantic Suspense
 Release Date: June 26, 2017

Blurb

You were my brother in the line of duty.
My partner.
My best friend.
You were the man who had it all.
Your thoroughness and precision made you a great cop.
It’s what got you killed.
And now I live with the darkening shadows of your memory.
You weren’t here when I needed you to save me.
You weren’t here when I needed help solving the most gruesome murder this town had ever seen.
But most of all, you weren’t here to keep me from falling in love with your wife.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

If Grayson appreciated the picture, she must have been a knockout. He was picky as hell with women. If they weren’t a debutante, he wasn’t giving them a second glance; however, most debutantes didn’t really hang around police stations. Grayson Cooks was still very single.

She told me last night that if I didn’t marry you, I was too ignorant to be her mother.

My Review:

Recluse was packed with an odd assortment of quirky and interesting characters as well as an intriguing storyline wrapped around a tractionless murder investigation with no leads and inexperienced detectives.  I was coasting along merrily, fully engaged in the story (although it took me a few beats to realize the setting was the same town as her previous Love Bug books), when that slippery and crafty trickster known as Jaycee Ford tossed me a heinous and despicable cliffhanger.  I am still stamping my little foot and foaming at the mouth in a complete pique.  I am fully invested and on the hook with this one, I cannot let it go and must know how this mystery resolves.  I was easily drawn to the endearing characters and ever so curious about the crime.  Sigh… hurry Ms. Ford.  Please!  Hurry!  Despite her vile cliffhanger, I remain a Faithful Ford Fangirl - for life.

Favorite Quotes:

“I loved God, but according to her, anything short of becoming a missionary was not considered God’s work.  I was certainly no missionary.  I didn’t even like that position.”

“I saw Tracy here almost daily and I’d always wanted to ask her out, but I also liked free coffee.  One thing was certain, if I asked her out, I’d never get free coffee again.”

“I was sure hormones had come into play.  It was the only explanation for why she kept looking at me like I was a second helping of pecan pie.”

“There isn’t a word strong enough to tell you how I feel.  I love you.  I adore you.  I cherish you.  I worship you.  My life was nothing until God gave me you.  No one will ever take that away from me.”

“After all the years I’d known her, it turned out that I never really knew her; I never knew what she was fully capable of.  I’d spent so many years without her.  Now I wanted to spend the rest of my life absorbing every detail of her.”

“This is your life wifey.  The preacher said so two weeks ago.”

My Review:

I love this group of friends and was surprised I found myself aligned with Angie and antagonized at Tom – I mean… come on - Angie?  Of all people!  But - she was not who I thought she was, and I yet I am so very happy to be wrong.  The story was full of surprises, wry humor, intrigue, and suspense.  I adore Jaycee Ford and am already looking forward to her next book.

Favorite Quotes:

“You’re making my heart do things it’s never done before.”

“He gave me a mix of nervous excitement and calm.  I didn’t know how it was possible, but it was.”

My Review:

Sweet!  I enjoyed this book beginning to end.  It was truly refreshing to read a contemporary romance where the two main characters are not in constant conflict with each other, nor do they fight their attraction, deny their feelings, or feel they have to “let them go” for their own good.  They adored and loved each other, enjoyed and explored a new love, and reveled in each other.  Why is that so rare?  The conflict, as there always has to be some… came from an external source and proved to be the vortex of the suspense elements in the book.  I had not read Jaycee Ford before and had no expectations.  I am now a new fan.  I enjoyed her easy narrative, humor, and observations.  Her characters were interesting and comfortable.  The book was an easy and fast read, a providing me with a pleasant and entertaining afternoon.  One I would like to repeat with more of her work.
