While manslut best man J.C. is surprised when maid of honor Libitz soundly spurns his advances, his curiosity is piqued. The girl he couldn’t have becomes the only one he wants.

4.5 hearts

Favorite Quotes:

It's not cold enough in hell for me to fall for someone like you.

How many hearts had he broken? A million, she'd bet. Or more. And the funny thing was?   If you asked him, he'd probably say, 'None.' He probably assumed that because he wasn't interested and made it clear, it staunched any interest or expectation on the side of his partners. Stupid, selfish man. Women didn't work like that.

Her huge spirit was in such contrast to her tiny body, for a moment he wondered how she contained it.

You said that people can change and people can choose.   Well, I'm changing and I choose you.

My Review:

Katy Regnery has turned out yet another engaging, well written, and sweet-n-sexy story. This time, it involves a notorious playboy (J.C.) and a smart and savvy woman (Libitz) whose best friend has forbidden her to have anything to do with him. They start off on the wrong foot despite having a mutual attraction, but J.C. could easily stand for Just Casual, as that was the way he rolls with women, lots and lots of women. In addition to the enemies to lovers romance, the storyline also involved a bit of mystery and historical family research. I adored Libitz; she was feisty, smart, and true to herself.   As always, Ms. Regnery's writing was amusing, relevant, saucy, and pleasantly entertaining.

Book Review: Fat Fridays by Judith Keim

FAT FRIDAYS

by Judith Keim

B&N

Five Women, Five Stories, Five Reasons to Band Together

Following an ugly divorce, Sukie Skidmore is invited to join four other women for Fat Friday lunches, where everybody orders whatever they want, no calories counted. But their fun, friendly gatherings take a dark turn when one of the women shares shocking news that puts them all in jeopardy and each woman has strong reasons to believe she might be in danger. Facing an uncertain future, the women support one another through surprising situations as they search for the love and happiness each deserves.

A story of strong women and the friendships they form to help each other through difficult times. These five women, of varying ages, each have a different story. Betsy, the oldest, is a widow who's never known true love; Tiffany, the youngest, is discovering being married to a wealthy young man from a prominent family isn't all it's cracked up to be; naive Carol Ann is looking for the perfect man; Lynn is a mystery to them all until she tells them she's not who they think she is. It is Sukie who holds the group together even as she must decide if it's worth taking a chance on new love.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Her mother-in-law's smooth, oversprayed hair would frizz in a minute if she knew what Tiffany really thought about her, the family's phoniness, and the stomach-clenching way they made her feel.

The woman's narrow face and small dark eyes reminded her of watercolor drawings of a weasel she'd recently seen in a picture book.

Gasping like a goldfish whose bowl has just been shattered, Edythe stared at Sukie wide-eyed.

My Review:

Small town small minds are in full force with their own special blend of Southern judgmental sniping and vicious gossip - even during church. Having spent my unfortunate formative years in a similar inbred hamlet, I concur with Ms. Keim's astute observations and insights. Five women met for lunch every Friday and actually eat what they want without care of calories - hence the Fat in the Fat Fridays title - so clever. I adored the premise, storyline, and odd collection of characters. Each woman was facing their own personal challenges and found solace and uplifting support in their weekly lunch meetings, which expanded to more frequent everyday contacts and deeper friendships. They treated each other better than their own families and banded together to form an alliance when their selfish and priggish family members turned against them.   Written from a third person POV, the narrative was well-paced, intriguing, eventful, engaging, and entertaining. I am more than eager to dive into the next installment I see listed as Sassy Saturdays. This was first Judith Keim experience, and I was an instant fan.

About the Authorjudith-keim

Judith Keim was born and raised in Elmira, New York, and now makes her home in Idaho with her husband and long-haired dachshund, Winston, and other members of her family.

Growing up, books were always present - being read, ready to go back to the library or about to be discovered. Information from the books was shared in general conversation, giving all of us in the family a wealth of knowledge and a lot of imagination. Perhaps that is why I was drawn to the idea of writing stories early on. I particularly love to write about women who face unexpected challenges with strength and find love along the way. As J.S. Keim I write children's middle-grade novels. I love to write about kids who have interesting, fun, exciting experiences with creatures real and fantastical and with characters who learn to see the world in a different way.

Favorite Quote:

She growled, like an animal...She barred her teeth and I watched every muscle on her body tense.  If she could, she would have pounced, she would have torn me limb from limb.  She was like a caged animal; she'd regressed beyond the point humans walked on two legs.  They'd broken her.

My Review:

Tracie Podger is an evil genius... and grr, I fear she has broken me.  Far and away from my typical genre of women's fiction, I was totally enthralled with this twisted and diabolical story, despite the plethora of chilling and gruesome thoughts, memories, and crimes mentioned. This killer's story was creepy, eerie, gooseflesh-inducing, taut with intrigue and suspense, and ingeniously paced and expertly detailed to keep the reader on edge.  A Deadly Sin reminded me of a cross between the Brad Pitt movie of Seven and Alfred Hitchcock's version of Psycho, but even better.  I was totally invested and had remained engaged from page one until the worst thing in the world that could have happened - happened... I stamped my little foot, I turned the air blue with every obscene word I knew and even made up a few new invectives to hurl at Ms. Podger's likeness on her facebook page...  She dared to end this fiendishly clever and addicting installment with an ungodly cliffhanger.  Arg!  How cruel and inhumane!?!  I detest cliffhangers with the heat of a thousand suns!  A pox on her for ruining me... but only after she writes the next equally intriguing book at the speed of light - that does not end in another cursed cliffhanger.  THEN a pox should be delivered!  And it should be a really itchy one ;)

Synopsis

After a string of bad dates, Florence Gray is so over online dating. So much so, that if she has to survive another guy standing her up she might just do something crazy ... like accept the first proposal she gets.

So when she finds herself alone in the bar, again, Florence can hardly believe her eyes-or ears-when Hugh Humphreys swoops in and presents her with a proposal so adventurous she can't believe she's actually considering saying yes.

Because, after all, twenty-five days to plan a wedding is some feat and that’s while getting to know your fiancée, their disapproving Mother and dealing with a jealous ex. Throw in the small matter of where they should live and you have Florence wondering what the hell she's gotten herself into.

Can you really countdown to a wedding like an advent calendar? Fall in love with a stranger and make them your husband? Because if she's going to make it down the aisle Christmas morning, Florence has to find out and fast.

Favorite Quotes:

Because a man ages like a fine wine, he just gets better.  A woman is like a loaf of bread – we just start going off.

She leans in to kiss me on the cheek, her scent invading my nostrils.  So, this is what pure evil smells like.

She throws back her head in a totally ridiculous over the top posh laugh.  Imagine a horse having a panic attack, and you’re almost there.

As long as you don’t sit on Santa’s knee and start professing that you’re a ho ho ho.

She narrows her eyes at me as if she can actually shoot out ice with them.

My Review:

Laura Barnard is a sure thing.  I have read four of her engaging stories so far and she has provided me with countless hours of lively and saucy amusement.  I tend to maintain a smirk and frequently chortle while indulging in her entertaining tales.  Adventurous Proposal was a quick, easy, and humorous read with bits of heart squeezing drama and steamy goodness tossed in.

Val Shakely is a list-maker. Daily routine. Check. Calm, quiet (but successful) business. Check. No drama. No excitement. Some might call it boring, but it’s precisely the way Val likes it. She loves her hometown of Cambria, nestled in the mountains of Colorado, and runs a fruitful PR firm. And that’s more than enough for Val. So what if she doesn’t have a social life?

Then, her cousin Gwen decides to take on the local political bully, the Mayor, in head-to-head combat for the Mayoral seat and Val takes her company reluctantly, and against her better judgment, into the fray. The minute Val takes on Gwen’s campaign, the safe world that she has carefully constructed begins to unravel. She feels the pressure of the campaign and the personal attacks by Gwen’s opponent.

And as if that wasn’t complicated enough, Val finds herself falling in love. Val’s desire to stay on the sidelines is put to the test and she’s forced to reexamine the life she’s built as she trudges toward a new and more exciting future.
.

What Amazon.com reviewers are saying:

“…the perfect, light, romantic book to read on a rainy day, sipping Earl Grey.”
“…a delightful story!”

“…an excellent, fast paced book that will not disappoint.”
“A story with characters you will love, an entertaining plot, and a very enjoyable read.”

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

There was something comfortable about a nice shallow man, selfish and simple. The more she thought about her type, the more she realized her taste in men required some adjustment.

She's amazing and scary and beautiful and frustrating, and I think about her pretty much constantly.

She sounds wonderful and awful.

My Review:

The title of this book should have been Wallflowers Blooming (plural) - as both members of this couple (Val and John) were equally loner types, although each were workaholics and more than successful in their businesses - so not total recluses but more than a bit high strung, socially awkward, and prone to anxiety when uncomfortable. Their mutual attraction pulled them far from their comfort zones and found them mystified and off-balance. Their usual MO of avoiding tension became an impossibility once they both found themselves the target of a petty bully who happened to be a somewhat powerful business owner and local politician, one that Val's cousin was currently running against with Val's assistance in the campaign. The characters were likable and relatable, and the story was relevant and easy to follow. Ms. River's writing was observant, thoroughly detailed, and written from a third person POV with many insightful little touches that added texture and definition to the characters and depicted scenes. The plot was somewhat tense and busy with the difficult campaign issues and emotional upheavals, although the blossoming romance softened and sweetened the characters into stronger and significantly improved versions of themselves, which is always a highly desired and pleasant outcome for any story.

Book Review: Six Days in Leningrad by Paullina Simons

Six Days in Leningrad

HarperCollins

Paperback: 432 pages
Publisher: HarperCollins (September 20, 2016)

From the author of the celebrated, internationally bestselling The Bronze Horseman saga comes a glimpse into the private life of its much-loved creator, and the real story behind the epic novels. Paullina Simons gives us a work of non-fiction as captivating and heart-wrenching as the lives of Tatiana and Alexander.

Only a few chapters into writing her first story set in Russia, her mother country, Paullina Simons traveled to Leningrad (now St Petersburg) with her beloved Papa. What began as a research trip turned into six days that forever changed her life, the course of her family, and the novel that became The Bronze Horseman. After a quarter-century away from her native land, Paullina and her father found a world trapped in yesteryear, with crumbling stucco buildings, entire families living in seven-square-metre communal apartments, and barren fields bombed so badly that nothing would grow there even fifty years later. And yet there were the spectacular white nights, the warm hospitality of family friends and, of course, the pelmeni and caviar.

At times poignant, at times inspiring and funny, this is both a fascinating glimpse into the inspiration behind the epic saga, and a touching story of a family's history, a father and a daughter, and the fate of a nation.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

In my opinion four people were responsible for bringing down the Berlin Wall and Communism: Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, and my father.

My dad picked some cherries off the cherry tree and ate them.  He gave me five.  That was my lunch.  Gratefully I popped them in my mouth.  There were exquisitely sour.  When I mentioned this, my dad glared at me, as if I had insulted his cooking.
You don’t understand, Paullina.  All the things you want to remember.  I want desperately to forget.

As I stood at the foot of the stairs, the faded black and white details of my memory turned to color.  Shepelovo had always been a myth to me, but Fifth Soviet was reality, then and now.  I trudged up the stairs and became seven years old again.

Go into the woods, do your business.  You’ll feel much better… Stop it, you fool.  You will have to go in the woods in the end.  Go now and end your misery – and ours.  You haven’t stopped talking about a bathroom… Go now.

Russia was like a hard dream from which I could not wake up.

My Review:

I was provided with a review copy of this lovely book by TLC Book Tours  and HarperCollins.  Reading memoirs is a rare occurrence for me, however, in an effort to expand my horizons and keep those neurons firing, including this genre has been on my goal list.  Having read Ms. Simons’s breathtaking and heartbreaking tome of Lone Star last year, I knew this talented author to be a storyteller of the highest order and surmised that if I were to indulge in someone scratching through the muck and emotional detritus of their own story, hers would be the one to select.  I can happily boast – I chose wisely.  Ms. Simons wrote of her 1998 return visit to the areas of her childhood in St. Petersburg/Leningrad Russia with her father, after leaving at age ten in the 70s.  Her revelations and experiences were life altering for her, and eye opening and mind-bending for me.  As a self-indulgent American, I had no idea that opportunities and living conditions had remained so stark and limited.  I had never considered that a major superpower would view refrigerators, toilets, and running water as conveniences and luxuries or that their populous could shrug at those issues or would consider cleaning their ancient toilets as being a completely unnecessary task.

Ms. Simons’s writing was heaving with colorful insights and entertaining observations of not only the people and places of her travels, but also how the current observations of those people and places collided with her childhood memories of the same.  Bonuses included amusing tidbits of her personal exasperation as due to the lack of road signs, indoor plumbing, or eateries, she was often lost, always hungry, frequently suffering from the need to relieve herself, and meeting countless men named Viktor.  I enjoyed her personal pictures and found myself Googling the areas she mentioned as I devoured her emotive and transformative tale.  Despite the often archaic, dire, and bleak conditions she found, she imparted her narrative with loving care and respect for their experience.  I feasted on this meaty tome like a binge dieter hitting the buffet line.  I want to read everything this talented scribe has ever written.

Patrick “Beast” O’Brien. Brutal. Merciless. Duplicitous. A father in name only, traitor to his own Club, and a man living on borrowed time.

Facing the battle of a lifetime and determined to protect everyone from the fallout, she forges ahead alone. When he discovers Wendy’s secret, will he learn the true value of what he threw away and find the capacity to commence CONQUERING CIRCUMSTANCES?

Revenge. That dish best served cold. The need for it is eating Mik up inside. Filling him with hatred and blinding him to Maddi's struggle. He wants to avenge every wrong done to them while she wishes to forgive and forget.

It's said that only in our darkest hour do we find light. That may be true for the lucky ones. When your light has been extinguished and pitch-black bleakness has taken hold, you could be excused for doubting that it will ever be reignited.

In the past when people mentioned Joel O'Brien, they talked about "the quiet one". The boy who was the family's voice of reason and their go-to guy for wisdom well beyond his years. Nowadays, they whisper about the "crippled one". The man who radiates darkness, who wallows in his self-pity, and refuses to find a way to deal with the injuries he sustained at the beginning of the war that's threatening to engulf the Black Shamrocks MC.
Sascha Koswalski is the light of her family's life. With a smile that could brighten the day of the most hard-hearted, the single mother's innate exuberance lessens the pain of her physiotherapy clients. She's yet to find a patient who doesn't respond to her sunny nature and skilled hands.
Until Joel. The stubborn, angry man might be the one patient she fails. Unable to crack his protective shell, Sascha is on the verge of giving up when Joel shows her another side of himself. Buoyed by the knowledge that there is a man filled with hope hiding underneath his cold veneer, can the physiotherapist rehabilitate more than his broken body? Will she be the light that reignites his belief in himself and sets them both on the path to FINDING NIRVANA?

Wife to a Harley-riding, boating and fishing, four-wheel driving quintessential Aussie bloke.
Mum to two crazy, adorable, and original kids.
Crohn's Disease sufferer and awareness campaigner.
She’s also an avid tea drinker, a connoisseur of 80s/90s rock music, and is known for lacing everything she says with sarcasm and inappropriate innuendo.
Formerly working in finance, she was forced to reevaluate her plans for her life when severe Crohn's Disease brought her corporate career to a screeching halt. Restarting her childhood hobbies of writing and reading to alleviate the monotony of being sick and housebound, she found her calling, and is enjoying life to the max. A typical day is spent in the "real" world where she hangs out with her awesome family and "book" world where she gets to chill with her fictional characters.
Kylie writes the books she wants to read. A lover of strong men who aren't perfect and aren't afraid to admit it, straight talking women who embrace their vulnerabilities, and real life gritty stories, she hopes these themes shine through her writing. An avid reader of all genres, Kylie hopes to release books that keep the reader on the edge of their seat—be it with suspense, romance, or laughter.
