Book Review: Darcy Comes First (for a change): Love is a Beach by Lilliana Anderson

Darcy Comes First
(for a change):
Love is a Beach
by Lilliana Anderson

Amazon US / UK / AU / CA

Darcy is expecting a celebration. Or at least a nice piece of cake. Instead, she's served with divorce papers. Oh, and she's broke.

With her twenty-year union over and two children to support, she moves in with her eccentric grandmother, hoping to find peace and quiet in the seaside town of Bayside.

What she isn’t expecting to find is a set of saggy old man balls upon arrival.

Needing to bleach her eyes, calm her screaming teen daughter and stop her eight-year-old son from filming the chaos to upload, Darcy is already reconsidering the sanity in her decision. Turns out, Nana is quite the player in the retirement circle.

She also fancies herself a bit of a matchmaker.

Deciding local football legend, Leo Murphy will provide the ultimate distraction for Darcy, Nana enlists the help of her trouble-loving great-grandson with somewhat disastrous results. Leo doesn't know what hit him. Literally.

With a great smile and a body to die for, it isn’t hard to convince Darcy to give Leo a chance. It also helps that he has a lot of patience for one particularly rambunctious young boy and can’t run too fast on his busted knee—a captive audience is easily swayed, after all.

But with a teenager in the midst of a meltdown, a heart cracked and bruised, and a son who keeps her on her toes, even a chance could prove too much for Darcy. Luckily Leo isn’t the kind of man who gives up easily.

“I didn’t even know you could milk rice,” Archer says, his face scrunched up in thought while he mixes the fruit and porridge. “Do they even have titties?”

“I hope I never meet her.” “Oh, you will. Just keep an eye out for the flying monkeys, they’ll herald her arrival.”

I’m straight-up regular past-my-prime kinda pretty.

“Betsy is making espresso martinis as a test for our next craft club.” “Haven’t you two had enough to drink today?” “We’re so old, we need the alcohol to preserve our organs.”

I try not to spend too much time on one man, dear. They get too comfortable and next thing you know, you’re washing their underwear and vacuuming under their feet.

“We could go riding together. Start a gang.” She grins, her eyes dancing as she meets mine. The visual has me smiling. “And what would your gang be called?” She thinks for a moment, her lips working together as her eyes narrow. “The Bayside Biddies. We could get T-shirts.”

My Review:

This book had a bit of everything, humor, tons of family drama, angst, betrayal, vile villains, diabolical exes, feisty senior citizens, obnoxious teens, and a steamy romance with a delicious and swoon-worthy sex god. This was a well-balanced read between heavy and relevant family issues and humorous situations, with several active and eventful storylines and a large cast of unique and intriguing characters.

Darcy thought learning her husband was in remission would be a happy day for them, until he informed he was over being married and a father before they even left the parking lot. She was all the d’s - dumbfounded, devastated, decimated, and unknowingly debt-ridden; as he was long gone before evidence surfaced of his defaulted loans and their cleaned out bank accounts, which left her holding the bag for a massive amount of debt and no home, assets, or means to pay them or meaningful skills to support her children.

Yikes! An abandoned, betrayed, and broke forty-year-old housewife doesn’t sound like the basis for a humorous novel, but fear not, this entertaining tale contained a considerable amount of highly amusing and provocative levity; which was primarily provided by Darcy’s disarmingly endearing and vibrant grandmother and her little gang of cocktail swigging octogenarians and their drunken craft gatherings/coven meetings/tarot readings/and busybody meddling. Nana and the Biddies were a source of constant amusement, and I enjoyed each and every one of their contributions.

I gleaned a few unfamiliar gems for my Aussie Word List with spruiker – which was defined by Mr. Google as “someone who tries to persuade people to buy something, use a service, etc often in a dishonest or exaggerated way” which is what I would call a huckster; ropable- angry; and gumnuts - the hard woody fruit of Eucalyptus trees, which in the story a little boy was using in his slingshot.

Book Review: Fool Me Twice by Lilliana Anderson

Fool Me Twice

by Lilliana Anderson

‘Some husbands bought their wives flowers, others bought jewelry. Mine? He returned the things he stole.’

I should have known better. Hot guys didn’t hit on big girls without an agenda. They didn’t approach them in bars and talk their way into your bed. They also didn’t make you feel beautiful and proud of your curves. But I was going through a dry spell—actually, I’d kind of been going through a dry spell all my life—and dry spells sucked. Of course I slept with him.

I was such a fool.

I believed his lines. Fell for his easy smile; the man swept me off my feet, rocked my world, then robbed me blind.

I really needed a three date rule.

Angry and embarrassed, I engaged the help of my best friend to track the thief down and make him return what he took. But when I found him, he wasn’t alone....

What does a girl do when she finds not one thief, but an entire family?

She marries into it, of course.

Favorite Quotes:

Guys often approached her, but she was painfully shy and socially awkward. The last time a hot guy spoke to her, he asked if he could buy her a drink and she just looked at him, then blurted, “I put make-up on dead people.” Yes, Alesha was a beautician at a funeral parlour—a fact I kept advising her to save for at least the second date, but her awkwardness always beat out her common sense.

I, on the other hand, was short and a little on the round side. Growing up, my aunt used to assure me that I was like a caterpillar, eating my way through all the leaves until I spun my cocoon and emerged a beautiful butterfly. She lied. I’m still a chubby caterpillar.

Um… please tell me that’s a tube of tennis balls you’re carrying in your pants… I, uh… think a baby elephant is missing a trunk somewhere…

Why would I be afraid? I stand in a refrigerated room and put make-up on corpses for a living. This is the most excitement I’ve had in years.

We’d gone to see the ballet at the Opera House and ridden the ferry to the zoo. I’d thrown up over the side and she’d laughed it off, telling me the fish would be grateful for the extra treat. I’d cried harder because we’d been eating fish and chips. I didn’t want the fish to be cannibals.

My Review:

I am conflicted about how to evaluate this book.  On one hand, it had a sweet and highly erotic love story with an interesting premise, and the writing was often humorous and witty enough to bring a smirk to my lips, but… I struggled with some of the storylines as well as the characters.  Nate was an erotic, filthy talking, porn-star worthy lover with a huge sacred member that was ultimately and aptly named Goliath.  Yet Nate and his peculiar family were unapologetic criminals with a complicated family dynamic.  They were sexy, crass, spoke with prolific profanity, and had a callous disregard for their victims or working people in general.  I had initially liked the feisty Holland until a night of earth-shattering sex seemed to have the pernicious effect of obliterating all rational sense, as she devolved into an addled moron.

After their night of porn-star worthy sex, Nate had drugged her and stripped her apartment bare of all her worldly possessions while she slept, even took her purse and ID, and stole her car.  The best sex she had ever had turned out to be costly on every level.  But honestly, who would give a man a second chance after that?  Or, a third chance after he did it again?  But she did and he did, and then they oddly ended up married.  Holland loved her husband and wasn’t afraid of him, but she feared his family, and for good reason.  Most women often feel as if their mother-in-law would like to kill them off or see them gone, but this steely mother-in-law was no small menace, she informed the hapless Holland, more than once, exactly how she would slit her throat – yikes.  I think I would have made tracks well before but most certainly would have after that, Goliath or not!

Book Review: Never Again by Lilliana Anderson

Never Again
by Lilliana Anderson

“This is highly inappropriate.”
“Why?” he rumbled in my ear.
“Because you’re so young, and because I’m now your boss.”
“That just makes it more exciting.”

Not even a year after marrying the guy she'd thought was the love of her life, Cora Knowles is already requesting a divorce. To her recollection, philandering was not a part of her wedding vows, and she wasn't about to stand by while 'Sally from accounts' rolled about on her Egyptian cotton sheets.

While trying to soothe her broken heart with copious amounts of cake and liqueur chocolates, her best friend, Olivia suggests that the best way to get over someone, is to get under someone else. Problems arise when the one Cora 'gets under' turns out to be the son of the Director of Prosecution—her boss. Worse still, he's young. Younger than Cora originally thought, and younger than she's comfortable with.

But, when the attraction is undeniable, Cora needs to decide whether she'll turn her back on the enigmatic Brandon Sharp, or take a risk and follow her heart, even though she promised herself she'd never do that again...

For me, social media was about sharing the best of my life and spying on other people’s. That’s why, when I found out my scumbag of a husband was cheating on me, I didn’t share a single tidbit of information with the world. I quietly changed my relationship status from ‘married’ to ‘it’s complicated’, then proceeded to cut the crotch out of every single pair of pants he owned.

There might be plenty of fish, but last night, I caught a shark. How am I supposed to go back to fish after I had shark?

“I’m not responsible enough to have a baby. I’m selfish and conceited and I don’t love anything other than my own reflection.” “That’s not true at all. You love money too.”

Addicted? You’re blaming this on a disease, Jack? As far as I know there is no legitimate disease that causes accidental dick insertion.

My Review:

Doing a bit of damage to her philandering husband’s head with her laptop after catching him bumping uglies with a coworker caused Cora a heap of trouble on the job, it appears that prosecutors aren’t supposed to be violent.  Her wily cheat of a husband turned out to be full of shocking surprises for the oblivious Cora.  But lucky for Cora, she was too distracted by her new intern to be as torn up over the death of her marriage as she could have been as despite her transitional age of twenty-nine, she had quickly turned into a sex-obsessed teenaged boy after one sampling of the dimpled and freshly minted twenty-year-old sex god.  They scorched the sheets and many other flat surfaces.  Oh my, this one was a sizzler.  Packed with expletives, erotic and salacious sensual scenes, scintillating and naughty banter, this one would definitely straddle the line of adult contemporary and erotic romance, but there was a rather sweet romance occurring between all the smoking hot sex.   Written from a first person POV, the storyline was entertaining and relevant while the writing was engaging, cleverly amusing, and while heavily sensual it was also emotive.  The story featured a large and memorable cast of quirkily endearing, intriguing, deeply flawed and wounded characters.

As modern women, shouldn’t we be high-fiving each other and adding a notch to our bedpost instead of calling it a walk of shame?

Right now, all I’m trying to do is take all of my broken pieces and turn them into a mosaic instead of just gluing them back together in the same old shape they always were.

Love is like a fart; if you have to force it, it’s probably shit.

My late husband used to cheat with the woman who lived at the end of our street. Then his dick got too old to stand up straight and he took too many of those Viagra pills. Terrible thing having to bury a man with a giant hard-on… I wasn’t sad to see him go, really. But I was sad that I had to organize his funeral—that other woman loved him more than I did. But then, she didn’t have to wash his dirty underwear every day for fifty-six years.

Fearless and brave aren’t the same thing. Brave is doing something even though it scares you. Careful people miss out on the greatest parts of life. Trust me, I know—I’m old. Old people know everything.

‘That’s why I got you a Sphinx. They’re hairless.’ He holds up the mewing cat, scratching it under its wrinkly chin... ‘He looks like an old man’s scrotum,’ Brad comments.

My Review:

Lilliana Anderson has a gift for painting vivid pictures with her words; I could clearly visualize each scene in totality as I was reading.  I enjoyed catching up with the characters from previous installments, although the beauty of this series is each book has strong enough legs to stand alone, but what is the fun in that?  I struggled to appreciate the main character of Ruby as she was incredibly obstinate and her unwarranted venom toward the character of Flynn was rude and arrogant to the level of mean girl – which is not one of my favorite tropes.  Ruby was actually a neurotic mess with a chaotic history of lousy taste in men and a default setting of poor choices, which she was continuing to make for what she thought were the right reasons.  Despite my frustrations with Ruby, the storyline was easy to follow and entertaining with welcome hits of amusing humor and a sizzling bit of salacious steam.

Excerpt

A sharp whistle pulled me out of the lives I was escaping into while reading The Poisonwood Bible. It had me engrossed as the family tried desperately to escape a wave of fire ants by running and jumping in a river that contained even greater dangers. My heart was in my throat and it took me a while to snap back to reality.
When I looked up, a familiar black Navaro was idling at the curb in front of me, and an even more familiar face was smiling down as he leaned across the car and peered at me through the open passenger window.
“I like your new footwear,” Tyler commented, grinning at me like he hadn’t just vanished from my life for two weeks.
“It’s the latest style,” I replied, squinting up at him as the sun shone down upon me where I was sitting on a park bench within the hospital grounds. An old lady with an IV pole was sitting on the other end, talking on the phone to someone about wishing she was allowed to have a cigarette.
“Suits you. Need a ride?”
“Janesa and Alex are coming to get me.”
“No they aren’t, I told Alex I’d fill in.”
Nodding, I chewed on my lip a little as I gathered my things and tried to ignore that jealous pang that hit me right in my stomach. Why hadn’t he called me first?
Switching off the engine, he got out of the car to help me up into the cab, the familiarity of his hands on my hips only served to remind me how much I’d missed him while he was gone. I’d really gotten used to his presence in my life after just a few short weeks, and in a way, I think it may have been better if he’d just stayed away. I wasn’t sure that I could cope with his disappearances the way his friends did.
“Feel better without the cast?” he asked as he climbed back into the driver’s side.
“I suppose,” I replied with a shrug, looking out the window as he started up the engine.
“Hey,” he said, reaching over and taking my hand in his. “I’m sorry, OK? I know I let you down.”
The feel of his skin against my skin filled me with more emotions than I had the right to feel where he was concerned. But, they got to me anyway, and it took me a moment before I could reply. “You don’t owe me anything, Tyler.”
Yes, I do, sweetheart,” he said, giving my hand a light squeeze before he placed both hands on the wheel and drove away from the hospital. I wanted to ask him where he’d been and why he hadn’t called. I wanted to ask him what he was really doing with me, but when I opened my mouth, an entirely different question fell from my lips.
“Where are you taking me?” I asked when he turned in the opposite direction to my apartment.
“Alex’s. Supposedly to study for the exam next week, but from what I hear, he and Janesa are getting pretty close. So who knows if we’ll get much done.”
“What are you going to do about the exams you missed?”
He glanced at me, grinning the million-dollar grin of his. “Taken care of. No need to worry about me.”
“If you say so,” I replied, folding my hands across my chest.
“You’re pretty pissed at me, aren’t you?” he asked after a while of driving in silence.
“Why would I pissed at you, Tyler?”
He shrugged. “I promised to look after you and I didn’t. You have to know that I’d never break a promise like that unless I absolutely couldn’t help it.”
I released a sigh. “Seriously, Tyler, I’m sure you had a great reason for taking off the way you did. But, it’s not like we’re in a relationship or anything. You’re here because you feel bad about breaking my ankle. I’m not naïve enough to think that it’s anything other than that. So, forget it. I’m not pissed.”
He glanced at me. “You’re pissed,” he stated with great authority.
“Oh, because you know me so well?”
“Yeah, I know you, sweetheart, and I’m pretty sure I’ve even told you that I like you. So I’m suggesting that you get the whole pity friendship bullshit idea out of your head and accept that I’m around because I like you.”
“You don’t know me at all,” I mumbled, feeling totally uncomfortable with the rest of what he said. I wasn’t sure why. I guess I just didn’t really believe it. We were never friends before I broke my ankle, and the time he spent away made me really struggle to see how suddenly, everything changed and we were friends or whatever we were supposed to be. It didn’t make sense to me.
He reached out and placed his hand over mine, entwining our fingers. “I know you, Sarah. And I like you. And I’m going to keep turning up to hang out with you. Deal with it.”
“Fine,” I replied, still looking out the window but secretly, my pulse was racing at a million miles an hour from the fact he was holding my hand as we drove. God, I missed him, and no matter how hard I tried to be angry with him, that simple gesture made my heart sing. I was a mess, and Tyler Lohan was going to break my heart. I could feel it, but I wanted him anyway.

Excerpt

“Cody?” I turn to the sound of a male voice, and when I turn, it takes me a moment to recognise him.

“Elliot?” I confirm, as I take in his cropped hair, his broad shoulders, and his massive height. I’m smiling because while I know it’s him – he still has those iridescent blue eyes - but, I can hardly believe it at the same time. He’s about twice the size I remember him, although it’s all muscle. He looks amazing.
He smiles and gives me a friendly hug. “It’s been a long time. This is my wife, Paige.”
The obviously pregnant woman at his side gives me a beautiful smile and holds her hand out to shake mine. She’s a little taller than I am at five foot, eight, and she has beautiful brown curly hair and interesting amber coloured eyes which gives her an otherworldly quality. They’re a stunning couple and I feel as though I’m staring, but I can’t stop.
“It’s lovely to meet you. Elliot’s been telling me all about his time here. Sounds like you all had a lot of fun,” Paige says when she withdraws her hand from mine.
“We did,” I confirm then have a brief conversation with them to catch up on the last seven years of Elliot’s life. “Sounds like you’ve been really busy. Have you kept in contact with anyone else from your squad?” I try to slip the question in there naturally.
He smiles knowingly. “I still talk to Brad. He should be here soon. He just had a few things to do at work before he could come.”
“Oh, I didn’t mean…” He pats me on the shoulder.
“He wants to see you too.”
The blush creeps up my cheeks before I can stop it.
“Elliot!” Paige reprimands. “You’ve gone and embarrassed the girl.”
I shake my head. “It’s fine, really. And he’s right. I am asking about Brad. I don’t know how much you know, but it’s been a long time and things didn’t exactly end well. I’ve been worried he might still be angry and wouldn’t want to speak to me.”
“It was a long time ago,” Elliot says, kindly. Then another male voice speaks up from behind me.
“It feels like yesterday being back here though.”
I freeze at the sound of his voice and stay that way as he greets Elliot and Paige before turning to me. He smiles. I can’t breathe. He still looks the same but the lip and brow rings are both gone. There’s a small scar in his right eyebrow where the ring was torn out.
That scar is my fault I think, as my eyes graze over it, noticing all of the tattoos covering his forearms. One side is new. He didn’t have both sides done before. The realisation of missing out on so much of his life hits me in the chest and twists like a knife. I wish things were different, I really do…
“Dakota,” he says, and my name rolls off his lips like a fine piece of music. I long for him to call me Cody like he did back then.
“It’s so good to see you. How have you been?” I ask breathlessly. My heart beats in my ears, and I feel incredibly warm and a little shaky.
He drops his gaze to the floor for a moment and slides his hands into his pockets. “I don’t want to do small talk with you, Dakota.”
I’m a little taken aback. “You don’t?”
He shakes his head. “No. Will you walk with me?”
I have to force myself to swallow as a fear grips my heart. If I tell him now, he’ll go away forever. I just got him back. I want to keep him for a moment…just a moment. Then I’ll let him go.
“But…but there’s dinner… and… and…”
He holds out his hand. “I don’t want to wait any longer than I already have.”
Apprehensively, I slide my hand in his, knowing that mine will feel warm and clammy to him. How is he acting so calm?
As his hand closes around mine, I close my eyes, taking a brief moment to acknowledge that it feels like home. It feels right. It feels the same.
He escorts me out to the balcony then down the stairs that lead to the pontoon. He releases my hand at the bottom and slips his hands back in his pockets again. Before I was feeling warm–now I’m suddenly cold.
“I guess you brought me out here for some sort of an explanation,” I state, as we walk along in silence for a few moments.
“Well, it is the great mystery of my life. It’s supposed to be the guy who ditches and runs, not the girl.”
It’s his attempt at a joke, but neither one of us laughs. I think we’re both caught in the same memory. The last time we were together before he asked me to wait for him and I didn’t…

“Are you OK?” he asked, lying beside me, as he held a warm compress between my thighs.
I nodded and lightly ran my hand down the side of his face, my finger touching the ring in his brow and ending at the ring in his lip. He was so beautiful. He was everything I had wanted or even hoped for. He turned slightly and kissed my fingertips.
“I’m perfect,” I whispered.
He smiled, leaning down to lightly kiss my lips. “Yes. You are.”
“I love you,” I told him.
“I love you,” he whispered in return, taking my mouth in his…

“I don’t know what to tell you,” I say, trying to blink away the tears that sting my eyes when I remember what we lost.
“How about you just tell me what happened?”
I take a deep breath, thinking back to that day, and wanting to tell him–even if I just tell him that I didn’t leave him. I was forced away…
I look at him, my mouth opens to speak but all I manage is “I…I…”
“You what?” he presses, and I clamp my mouth shut before shaking my head.
“Cody,” Stacey interrupts, holding out my phone. “It's Riley. He's saying he needs you to go home.” I wince because Brad doesn't know about Riley. She glances over at Brad. “Oh, uh…hi, Brad, I didn't know you were here.”
He looks from me to her, and there's a ticking in the side of his jaw. “Actually, I was just leaving.”
