Giveaway & Review Tour: The Grimoire Saga - S.M Boyce

Series: Grimoire Saga
Book: Lightgates
Author: S.M. Boyce
Book Synopsis:
Kara Magari is about to discover a beautiful world full of terrifying things—Ourea.
Kara, a college student still reeling from her mother’s recent death, has no idea the hidden world of Ourea even exists until a freak storm traps her in a sunken library. With no way out, she opens an ancient book of magic called the Grimoire and unwittingly becomes its master, which means Kara now wields the cursed book’s untamed power. Discovered by Ourea's royalty, she becomes an unwilling pawn in a generations-old conflict—a war intensified by her arrival. In this world of chilling creatures and betrayal, Kara shouldn’t trust anyone… but she’s being hunted and can’t survive on her own. She drops her guard when Braeden, a native soldier with a dark secret, vows to keep her safe. And though she doesn’t know it, her growing attraction to him may just be her undoing.
For twelve years, Braeden Drakonin has lived a lie. The Grimoire is his one chance at redemption, and it lands in his lap when Kara Magari comes into his life. Though he begins to care for this human girl, there is something he wants more. He wants the Grimoire.

Book Review:
If you know me, you know that my dream is to become an author one day. Lichgates is the embodiment of the stories I try to write. Boyce created a world that is all her own. It’s full of fascinating people, including a very strong main character named Kara. She is everything that a leading female should be: strong, opinionated, and, of course, in trouble. This was one of those books that you can easily get lost in for hours, or in my case, a few lunch periods. Lichgates not only followed Kara and Braeden on their journey throughout Ourea but also delved deep into the history and politics of the realm, something that a lot of fantasy novels lack these days. Personally, I’d put this one up there with Eragon, Harry Potter, and Percy Jackson.

Favorite Quotes:
“I’m here to take you home. Your father wants to talk to you, especially since you let him think you were dead for twelve years. I’m fairly certain sons aren’t supposed to do that to their fathers”

“You alone decide where to go next. There is always a choice.”

“Maybe you’re so good at listening that you have no idea when to speak.”

“There are dragons and monsters. Of course this thing can take us through walls.”

“Forgive but never forget.”

“Don’t let others speak for you, or you will lose your voice forever.”

“’We were expecting someone, uh- taller.’ ‘No, you were expecting a big burly man,’ she corrected. ‘I’ve heard this already.’”

“I’d hoped you all had grown a little wiser after a thousand years.”

“I don’t even know what the word ‘normal’ means anymore’”

All In All: This book gets a five out of five. I absolutely loved it and am already running around advising it to people.

Book: Treason

Book Synopsis
Kara Magari ignited a war when she stumbled into Ourea and found the Grimoire: a powerful artifact filled with secrets. To protect the one person she has left, she strikes a deal that goes against everything she believes in. But things don’t go as planned.

Braeden Drakonin can no longer run from who—and what—he is. He has to face the facts. He’s a prince. He’s a murderer. He’s a wanted man. And after a betrayal that leaves him heartbroken, he’s out for blood.

To survive, both Kara and Braeden must become the evil each has grown to hate.

Book Review:
There were a few words I thought of as I read this book: betrayal, revenge, secrets, revelations, and more of the like. However, only one phrase seemed to properly sum this book up: plot twists. So many plot twists are thrown at the reader that, if it wasn't set up exactly the way it is, could have become overwhelming. But Boyce wrote such an amazing second book to the series that the plot twists, betrayals, and secrets only add to it. Throughout this book, she shows great growth not only within Kara but also within Braeden, and even Gavin. One of the most difficult things for any author to do is to make the readers feel exactly what their characters are. I will admit, I felt Kara's anger quite often throughout this book. It is a worthy successor to Lichgates, delving ever deeper into the secrets and politics of Ourea.

Favorite Quotes:
“None should endure mindless obedience. I won’t control you as long as you don’t do anything stupid”

“You underestimate yourself. Don’t do that anymore. It limits you.”

“Dearest little Braeden – You should keep better track of your toys.”

“’So tell me, what do you have to live for in a world full of loss?’ ‘Everything.’”

“You don’t have to be evil. You can be good, if you want.”

“’I thought you would have less’ – she paused – ‘skin’”

“I can save myself”

“I prefer real keys, but no, humans enjoy fixing things that aren’t broken”

“Everything between those two is a sport. If they didn’t duel each other, they likely made an event of seeing how many Stelians each could kill”

“How many simply did as their Blood commanded in an effort to survive?”

“Sometimes impossible just means you have to try harder.”

“Regret flared for a moment in Kara’s gut, but she refused to show it. She straightened her back and met the queen’s eye.”

“Yakona are always late, Kara. It’s just our way.”

“Adele was too busy beating me senseless in our sparring to ask for them. I was too busy healing myself to remember”

All In All: Again, definitely a book I would recommend. I just learned that there’s a fourth book, and I’m going to have to go buy that one too! It’s a series I believe everyone would be content reading more than once.

Book: Heritage

Book Synopsis:
Kara Magari isn’t normal, even by Ourea’s standards—and in a world of shape-shifters and soul stealers, that’s saying something. To the royalty, she’s a loose cannon. To the masses, she’s a failure. But Kara’s arrival in Ourea started a war, and she’s going to end it.
An ancient isen named Stone takes an interest in Kara’s training, and it turns out he has more answers than he originally led her to believe. In an effort to unearth a secret that might end the bloodshed, Kara instead discovers an ugly truth about her family—and how much she has in common with an infamous mass-murderer.
Braeden Drakonin has slowly rebuilt his life after the betrayal that tore it apart. His father wants him dead, and frankly, his so-called allies wouldn’t mind that either. Private alliances are formed. Secrets are sold. Tension is driving the armies apart. A single battle will end this war, and it’s coming. Braeden may be a prince, but it will take more than that to survive. He must take the fight to his father’s door—and win.

Book Review:
At this point, I'm dying to tell you all absolutely everything that happens in this book. But, I can't bring myself to spoil such a great book for you. Much like Treason, Heritage comes with many revelations and many more betrayals. However, it also showed a definite growth in many characters: including Kara, Braeden, and even Gavin and Aurora. Throughout this book, The Kirelm princess actually became my favorite character. She's evolved so much, becoming more than what I had expected her to be. She's a very empowering character, when you look at it, and it's an amazing thing that Boyce is able to create so many powerful characters, that she can write so many inspirational quotes. She is truly an exceptional author. The fourth book in the series, Illusion, is at the top of my Christmas wish list (cough cough, hint hint). I've truly enjoyed enveloping myself in the world of Ourea this far, and as afraid of the beauty of the story ending, I'm equally as excited to see how Boyce ties everything up.

Favorite Quotes:
"Her mentor threw a brick through her window to wake her up. the dramatic son of a -"

"He burped in answer. How charming."

"With each step, white light glimmered i nthe stone under his boot, and the air hummed as if he'd stepped on a piano key. He shook his head. Only in Ayavel would this sort of thing exist."

"'I'm here to kill you.' Her grandfather said. 'You aren't doing a very good job of it.'"

"Silly things, wars. They take up so much time/"

"She needed someone to empower her and believe in her. I'm proud of how you forgave her and risked everything to help her even when she didn't deserve that kindness from you."

"I may be Stelian, but I'm apparently not as heartless as you."

"Being feared shouldn't make her strong."

"'I don't trust isen.' Gavin said. Kara shrugged. 'You don't trust anyone, so that doesn't mean much.'"

"He pouted - full on pouted. A prince. Pouting."

"'What are you?' He asked, his red eyes wide. 'Efficient.'"

"The modest acknowledge their mistakes. The wise both confess to their failures and vow to never repeat them. But it takes a strong warrior to forgive herself as well."

"Uncertainty  crept into his gut. Was that a no? Should he assume the smile meant yes? Or did all girls do this to mess with their men?"

"Deidre just sighed. Men."

"'What happened to the little girl I raised?'... 'She died in Carden's dungeon, Father.'"

All In All: I love this book. It's fair to say that I am addicted to the world within the pages, and if you haven't read it yet, well, you have no idea what you're missing out on.

Book Blast: Knowing Vera - Rachelle Ayala

Some secrets are best untold.
Vera Custodio has never fallen in love, though she has strong feelings for her friend and sometimes lover, Zach Spencer. Long-forgotten memories resurface when Vera discovers Zach’s mother was the woman her father supposedly murdered many years ago.
After losing his leg, former triathlete Zach Spencer reevaluates his life—and realizes he’s falling in love with Vera. When she ends their relationship, Zach is determined to prove his love and follows her to Australia in search of the killer.
Caught between a web of family secrets and a deranged adversary, Vera and Zach must depend on each other for survival. Love blossoms, but the truth explodes everything Vera knows about herself. Will she close her heart forever or risk it all for a shot at happily-ever-after?

Excerpt

I’ve never been in love. Serious like? Yes. But love? Not happening. Doesn’t matter if he’s sinfully hot or responsible for global panty warming. Or even if he’s the sweetest, most gorgeous man on the planet. I can still walk away. I have to.
Zach Spencer, scion of an Australian wine fortune, ambles slowly from the light-rail platform and waves. His swimmer’s physique, sun-streaked blond hair and audacious grin revs my heart every time. I can’t help but jump to my tippy-toes like one of those silly game show contestants. But today, I’m not going to run into his arms because I have to break up with him.
He steps toward me, oblivious of the crowd parting at the sight of his artificial leg. The muscular calf on his right leg contrasts sharply with the metallic rod and linkages of the other, ending with an artificial foot.
Until a few months ago he was a world-class athlete, a contender for the 2016 Olympic Triathlon team, but he lost his lower left leg in a jet ski accident while rescuing my friend Maryanne.
His magnetic blue eyes lock onto me as he wraps me in a toe-curling hug. Butterflies tickle my stomach and I want to disappear into his arms. How on earth can I end this without hurting him?
“Ready for the opera?” He guides me through the turnstile.
I tug at one of his oversized pockets. “Seriously, cargo shorts in winter?”
“I’m Aussie.” He kisses me with a loud smack.
“I suppose you’ll tell me it’s summer Down Under. Are all Aussie men so tough?”
“Dunno, but all Filipinas are gorgeous.” He winks and takes my hand, pulling me up the stairs and onto the crowded street. His smile raises the temperature a few degrees. “Shall we hop on a cable car or have dinner first?”
“Let’s catch a cab and take a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge. Have you ever been there?” I’m dressed to the nines, spiky stilettos and a metallic sequined dress, but the walk hopefully won’t be long.
He tucks an errant strand of hair in back of my ear. “No, but I hear guys are always proposing there. I’d have a hard time dropping to one knee …”
“Stop joking. We’re only friends—with benefits.”
“True, but we haven’t been very … friendly … lately.” His eyes telegraph bedroom, and his tongue does a quick flick over his teeth. “It’s my fault, of course.”
I caress the back of his hand with my thumb. “You’ve just recovered from major surgery. I’m glad to see you walking again.”
“Me, too. Now we can go places and get to know each other. Maybe start dating?”
A gasp catches in my throat. I never pegged him as the dating type. I suck in a deep breath to calm my speeding heart.
If only things were different and I hadn’t discovered the truth about our families.

Excerpt

Chapter One
It started on a warm April afternoon. Gusts of wind blew against the oak tree right outside my kitchen balcony, in my tiny apartment in Atherton, California. Sometimes the branches that touched the side of the building made scraping noises. The yellow huckleberry flowers twining their way across my apartment balcony infused the air with sweetness.
My mother had insisted, as was her tendency on most things, I take the pot of wild huckleberry, her housewarming gift, to my new two-bedroom apartment. It wasn’t really new, just new to me, as was the entire experience of living separately, away from my family, and the prospect of having a roommate, someone who could be a best friend, something I’d dreamed of since I finished high school and debuted into adulthood.
“Wait for me by the curb,” my mother said, her voice blaring from the phone even though I didn’t set her on speaker. “You need to eat better.” Her usual punctuation at the end of her orders.
So, I skipped down three flights of steps and headed toward the side of the apartment building to await my mother’s gift of the evening, salad in an á la chicken style, her insistent recipe to cure me of bad eating habits. At least it wasn’t chicken soup double-boiled till the bones melted, I consoled myself.
I hadn’t waited long when a vehicle careened round the corner. I heard it first, that high-pitched screech of brakes wearing thin when the driver rammed his foot against it. From the corner of my eye, even before I turned to face it, I saw the blue truck. It rounded the bend where Emerson Street met Ravenswood, tottered before it righted itself and headed straight at me.
I took three steps back, fell and scrambled to get back up as the vehicle like a giant bullet struck the sidewalk I had only seconds ago stood on. The driver must have lost control, but when he hit the sidewalk it slowed the vehicle enough so he could bridle his speed and manage the truck as he continued to careen down the street.
My mother arrived a half minute later but she had seen it all. Like superwoman, she leaped out of her twenty-year-old Mercedes and rushed toward me, all breathless and blonde hair disheveled.
“Are you all right?” She reached out to help me up.
“Yes, yes,” I said, brushing the dirt off my yoga pants.
“Crazy driver. Brie, I just don’t know about this business of you staying alone here like this.” She walked back to her white Mercedes, leaned in the open window, and brought out a casserole dish piled high with something green. Make that several shades of green.
I followed her, admittedly winded.“Seriously, Mom. It’s just one of those things. Mad drivers could happen anywhere I live.”
She gave me no end of grief as to what a bad idea it was for me to live alone like this even though she knew I was going to get a roommate.
“Mom, stop worrying,” I said.
“You’re asking me to stop being your mother, I hope you realize this.”
“I’ll find someone dependable by the end of the week, I promise.” No way I was going back to live at home. Not that I came from a bad home environment. But I had my reasons.
I had advertised on Craig’s List, despite my mother’s protests that only scum would answer “those kinds of ads.”
Perhaps there was some truth to Mother’s biases, but I wouldn’t exactly call Sarah McIntyre scum. If she was, what would that make me?
Sarah’s father had inherited the family “coal” money. Their ancestors had emigrated from Scotland (where else, with a name like McIntyre, right?) in the early 1800s and bought an entire mountain (I kid you not) in West Virginia. It was a one-hit wonder in that the mountain hid a coal fortune under it, and hence the McIntyre Coal Rights Company was born. This was the McIntyre claim to wealth, and also a source of remorse and guilt for Sarah, for supposedly dozens of miners working for them had lost their lives due to the business, most to lung cancer or black lung, as it was commonly called. Hazards of the occupation.

Elena was getting upset as she defended her family’s honor. She wasn’t thinking about where that might lead. She wasn’t thinking at all.

“Why, Elena, I didn’t mean to upset you.  I just meant that-“

“I know exactly what you meant, Barbara Thomas! You think your family is better than anyone else in this town. You always have. Just because your dad happens to be the former mayor’s son doesn’t mean you own this town and everyone in it! I’m so sick of your mock sentiment when all you really feel is that you’re better than everyone. You’re no better than the rest of us!”

As she yelled, things around her felt funny, and she realized she heard screaming. She looked around, and was startled to see everyone staring at her, horrified. She took a deep breath, and realized what had happened. She let her emotions get away from her, and her powers erupted.

The only words she could think of to describe the scene around her were total chaos.  Every locker had burst open, and the entire contents – books, folders, papers, pictures, mirrors, backpacks – had come flying out. The posters on the walls were scattered everywhere. Most of the students and teachers were picking themselves up off the floor. Elena knew her powers had gotten totally out of hand, and she made everything around her fly out of control, literally.

She heard footsteps walking toward her, the only sound in the hall. She looked up and saw her counselor, Mrs. Adams, walking toward her. She gently took Elena by the shoulder and guided her to her office. She looked back and saw Barb and the other Bimbettes staring at her, as well as everyone else in the hall.

Interview
1. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a freelance writer and author. “The Chosen,” a middle-grade fantasy novelette was my first book, and was followed by “My Open Heart,” an autobiography about growing up with heart disease. “Nature’s Unbalance” is the second story in THE CHOSEN series. I’m currently working NEW AVALON, a YA fantasy series. Book 1, "Destiny," is available on Amazon. I was born in New Jersey, grew up in Florida, and live in Kansas.

2. What inspired you to write Destiny?
I started writing it during a NaNoWriMo quite a few years ago. I burned out about halfway through, though, and had the draft sitting in the drawer for a while. I took it out and worked on it every so often. Finally, earlier this year, I decided to take it out and finally finish it. When I chose to write this story for NaNo, it was because I wanted to write a modern day King Arthur story, but I also wanted to focus on the female characters, particularly the Lady of the Lake.

3. Where do you usually get your ideas for your books?
From TV shows and movies I watch, or other books I read. I’ll be enjoying the story, and suddenly start recreating it in my head the way I want things to be. Then, if an idea really sparks, I’ll run with it and make it my own, changing the characters and themes to ones I’ve created.

4. How did you come up with the title?
New Avalon was the original title of the book. As I was working on it this year, I suddenly found myself writing scenes that made a better fit in a separate story, and new I had just created a series. I kept New Avalon for the series name, and had to come up with a title for the first book. I chose Destiny because the book is all about Elena, my main character, learning about her destiny.

5. Do you feel like there is a little bit of you in your characters?
Always. My main characters are big reflection of me and my personality. Through them, I can escape my bubble and go out in the world and do adventurous things.

6. How important are the names of the characters in Destiny?
Some of them are more important than others, and were chosen because of whom the character reminded me of. But many of them were names off the top of my head.

7. Is there some sort of message in your book you’d want your readers to grasp?
Definitely: Reach for the stars, and make your dreams come true. This is the motto I came up with years ago when I started writing, and created my website. I have always been a big dreamer, and I truly believe that if you believe in them enough, and work hard enough, your dreams can and will come true. I try to put this message in my books as well, and portray my characters as working hard to make their dreams come true.

8. What books have influenced you the most in life?
Growing up, I loved reading Judy Blume. Her books were perfect for getting me through my awkward adolescent years, because her characters dealt with the same issues. I also loved Sweet Valley High. There were a great mix of characters, and at least one I could identify with. When I was older, Harry Potter had a huge influence on me, and piqued my interest in fantasy. When I began writing MG and YA fantasy, JK Rowling became a huge mentor I could look up to and learn from.

9. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
Watch TV and movies. No matter what I’m watching, I can get pulled in to the storyline, so much so that I’ll start to converse and even yell at the TV. I don’t even realize it until my husband asks, “What did you say.” Then I answer, “Nothing, I was talking to the TV.” Lol

10. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I’ve always loved writing, and enjoyed working on stories and research papers in school. When I was close to the end of my sophomore year of college, I needed to change majors. I had no idea what I was going to do. My sister said, “You love writing, why don’t you do that?” And the spark started. I earned my BA in Journalism, and started freelancing after college. Then I started to write my books, and the rest is history.

11. Can you tell us about the challenges you faced, if any, when it came to publishing your first book?
The biggest challenge was finding a publisher. Once I found one and my book was published, I had to learn how to market it. That’s something I didn’t expect; to have to market the work myself. I guess I always thought that when a publisher published your book, they do the marketing, too. I quickly learned this is not always the case. It took a long time before I learned how to market my books, and I’m still learning as I go.

12. If you had to go back and do it again, would there aspects in any of your work, not just Destiny, that you would wish to change?
I actually did go back and change my first book. I rewrote it, fixing spots I didn’t like now that I’ve been writing for a while. I’m still learning how to write action scenes better, and build them up. I would like to go back and study some aspects of writing those scenes, and other action-packed scenes, before writing the books. But I can use what I’ve learned over the years to keep moving forward.

13. What has been the toughest criticism you have faced of your work?
Being told my books aren't long enough or don’t have enough action scenes. When I’m writing, I feel like I’m writing so much, and getting to the end of the book is like a marathon. I can’t imagine adding more than I’ve already written. A lot of my readers like my books being shorter than others they’ve read; but I’ve also heard critiques saying they’re not long enough.

14. What was the best compliment?
When’s the next book coming out J

15.Do you have anything you want to say specifically to your readers?
Thank you for reading my books, and for enjoying them. Thank you for your reviews and comments. Thank you for wanting to read more. I plan to deliver.

16. Are there occupational hazards to being a novelist?
For me there are a few: Muscle aches and pains from sitting at my computer, stress from trying to write difficult scenes and worrying about how the published books are doing, fatigue from writing for long hours. I also find myself realizing it’s been several hours since I ate, and should take a break to eat something.

17. Do you ever wish you had a completely uncreative job like working in a factory?
Sometimes, but not working in a factory. There are times where I wish I had a job where I could just clock in, do the necessary work, and clock out. But I’ve had other jobs in the past, and none of them were as fitting to me as writing. I wouldn’t change it for anything.

18. How do you get yourself into your “writing zone”
I sit at the computer, read over some previous pages, decide what comes next and start writing. Some days I may only get a paragraph or two, others I could find my muse taking over and write several pages.

19. What makes you laugh?
My puppies, my husband, certain shows and movies.

20.Coke or Pepsi?
Coke

ISBN-13: 978-1492720195

A story of vengeance, forgiveness and love...

After her husband’s untimely demise, Marietta Gatti is banished from the family’s villa by her spiteful mother-in-law. She returns to her hometown of Venice and her only kin—a father she hasn’t spoken to since her forced marriage. Her hope of making amends is crushed when she learns she is too late, for he recently died under suspicious circumstances. Grief-stricken, Marietta retraces her father’s last night only to discover someone may have wanted him dead—and she may be next. Nico shrugged in the French wingback chair they had placed by the fireplace for his portrait. He looked regal in a black silk suit trimmed in gold and a waistcoat of burgundy and gold leaf-patterned brocade. It seemed Raul had excellent taste in men’s fashions.
Marietta rolled her eyes before she settled in a chair behind the easel. “Please keep still while I draw.”
“May I talk?”
“I’d rather you didn’t.” Looking at him was going to be enough distraction. She didn’t need to listen to him also.
He ignored her request. “I have to ask—why Palladino?”
Marietta blew out an exasperated breath. “I can’t sketch you properly if you talk.”
“You could have chosen any man at the Consul’s villa. Casanova himself expressed interest in you, yet you leave with that pig.”
“It’s not what you think.” She compared her drawing to Nico and frowned. His shoulders were no longer in the same position.
“You didn’t have to suffer the man’s dismal lovemaking. What were you thinking?”
“We did not make love,” she replied through clenched teeth.
He continued as if not hearing her. “You’re the first woman in years that he didn’t have to pay, though he would never admit to his need for courtesans. I just don’t understand how you could find him appealing.”
“We did not make love.” She practically shouted it this time. “I’m not attracted to Palladino or any other man for that matter.”
This silenced him, gratefully, but only for a few moments. “Well, in that case, I know of a few courtesans that can accommodate you. I am told they are quite beautiful and skilled.”
Marietta threw down her charcoal and marched over to him. She grabbed his shoulders and repositioned him. “That is not what I meant and you know it.”
He smiled up at her innocently. “I didn’t mean to offend you, but you have refused my charms, so what should I think?”
She glared at him for her own benefit, knowing it would have no effect on the man. “You need to stop talking and moving.”
When he didn’t respond, she said, “That’s better.”
He lasted almost fifteen minutes. “So, what kind of man are you attracted to? Perhaps, I could suggest a few potential lovers.”
“How about one who has fewer conquests than fingers and toes? Or one that values honesty and fidelity over all else? Do you know any like that?”
From the thoughtful look on his face, he took this as an earnest question. “I’m afraid, Kitty, a man like that will be hard to find in Venice, especially this time of year.”
“Well, then, I guess I’ll have to go without.”
“How depressing. What will you do for amusement if you don’t take a lover?”
Marietta rubbed at her temples and decided she deserved more than the coins she’d already been paid. “There’s more to life than pleasuring oneself.”
“Really?”
“Yes, Signore, really.” She placed her stub of charcoal on the easel’s tray and rolled the stiffness from her neck and shoulders. “That is all for today. I have another appointment.” It was a lie, but she felt the need to rest and the bed in the corner was tempting her tired body.

About the Author:
Elizabeth McKenna works as a full-time technical writer/editor for a large software company. Though her love of books reaches back to her childhood, she had never read romance novels until one Christmas when her sister gave her the latest bestseller by Nora Roberts. She was hooked from page one (actually, she admits it was the first love scene). She had always wanted to write fiction, so when a psychic told her she would write a book, she felt obligated to give it a try. She combined her love of history, romance and a happy ending to write her debut novel Cera's Place. Her short story, The Gypsy Casts a Spell, is available for free on her website http://elizabethmckenna.com/. She hopes you will enjoy her latest novel, Venice in the Moonlight, as much as others have enjoyed her previous works.

Elizabeth lives in Wisconsin with her understanding husband, two beautiful daughters, and sassy Labrador. When she isn't writing, working, or being a mom, she's sleeping.
