Book Review: Until There Was Us (The Montgomery Brothers #7) by Samantha Chase

Until There Was Us

(The Montgomery Brothers #7)

by Samantha Chase

Megan Montgomery has always been the careful type. Except...one time at her cousin's wedding when she threw caution to the wind and had the steamiest hook-up of her life. But that was two years ago— why can't she stop thinking about it? So when Megan accepts a job at her cousin's company, she does everything she can to avoid Alex—knowing he'll shake up her carefully crafted world.

Alex Rebat's been living a good life. He loves his career and friends, but like Megan, hasn't been able to stop thinking about their passionate encounter. And once Megan moves to town, Alex makes it his personal goal to show her that maybe it's time to start taking a few more risks...

Favorite Quotes:

Her phone beeped, and she let out a small whine. “That sounds like reality calling.”

…her mother was a firm believer in short engagements and long marriages. Basically she believed in fairy tales.

I wasn’t flirting with anyone. I was merely being polite to the woman who has the ability to spit on our food.

You realize that every time you talk about your trip into the woods, your encounter with what I’m guessing was a squirrel gets wilder and wilder right?

My Review:

I was stunned when I counted over thirty Samantha Chase books on my Read list at Goodreads. Although I regret to report that this one is undoubtedly the least entertaining and my least favorite of that collection.  I struggled through most of the first half and had difficulty remaining engaged as the storyline seemed rather repetitive and progressed in extremely slow and tiny increments.  Nor could I connect or work up much feeling for the unsympathetic main character of Megan; other than for her love of Double Stuffed Oreos she was rigid, cold, and difficult toward the delectable and perfect BBF of Alex, whom I totally adored.  I seriously considered a DNF as over a hundred pages in - I couldn’t comprehend why a sexy, sweet, and romantic man such as Alex would be expending so much thought and effort to forge a connection with her, given her avoidant personality and chilly attitude.  Alex had the patience of a saint while I wanted to give the prickly Megan several hard pinches and maybe even a few choice whacks to the head with my Kindle.  But I stayed the course and was rewarded for my patience as the second half of the book marked a vast improvement over the Hallmark Channel blandness of first.  Glimmers of amusing humor and steam helped to perk up my interest and once the frosty Megan began to thaw, I enjoyed their sweet romance.

New York Times and USA Today Bestseller/contemporary romance writer Samantha Chase released her debut novel, Jordan's Return, in November 2011. Although she waited until she was in her 40's to publish for the first time, writing has been a lifelong passion. Her motivation to take that step was her students: teaching creative writing to elementary age students all the way up through high school and encouraging those students to follow their writing dreams gave Samantha the confidence to take that step as well.

When she's not working on a new story, she spends her time reading contemporary romances, playing way too many games of Scrabble or Solitaire on Facebook and spending time with her husband of 25 years and their two sons in North Carolina.

Book Review: Glam Squad & Groomsmen  (Enchanted Bridal #4) by Samantha Chase

Glam Squad & Groomsmen
(Enchanted Bridal #4)

by Samantha Chase

Dressing up as a bride once a week is all fun and games until you come face to face with your ex.

Penny Blake loves her job with Enchanted Bridal. She gets to model wedding gowns and help brides plan for their big day. And yet…she’s wanting a little more. Besides wishing for her own happily ever after, she has big dreams of making her own contribution to the business in the form of her own glam squad. Her bosses all think it’s a great idea, but right now she’s needed in other ways – like helping out with the groomsmen.

Was there any greater form of torture than having to help your sister plan her wedding?

That’s what Spencer Buchanan is facing and although he goes into it with a bit of an attitude, running into the girl who got away – three times! – suddenly made this whole wedding planning thing a lot more bearable. Moving back home was never part of his plan, but once Spencer sees Penny again, all bets are off. And having her help him with his fittings on his tux turn into his favorite pastime ever!

Favorite Quotes:

She was six, he was eight and Eva had conned him into being the groom for their pretend wedding game. And ever since then, she’d been hooked. On Spencer, not playing dress up.

“You know… while that was a cardio workout, I don’t think it can count as a good substitution for my class… But if we’re going to compete with Zumba, then we’d need to try… harder…”And hours later, Penny was fairly certain they had done the equivalent of two Zumba classes.

I seriously think we need to just come to grips with the fact that this is our thing… We talk a good game about being the type of people who enjoy going out to fancy restaurants, but at the end of the day, there is just something about being comfortable on the couch and eating some lo mein.

My Review:

Another sweet second-chance romance from Samantha Chase, I just adore her!  I have enjoyed all the books in this series, but who wouldn’t?  The book was short, sweet, and easy to follow.  The writing was entertaining, the characters were lovable, and the storyline was well balanced with steam, humor, and quiet tension.  Sigh, I have missed this group.

Leave it to his parents to think all he needed to get started on this new life was a new suitcase.

Ariel didn’t smile. She rarely did. She thought it caused wrinkles.

She wasn’t even his usual type, but it turned out his usual type wasn’t particularly good for him.

A man knew when to pay attention, and Dylan learned early on that food was to Paige what flowers were to some women.

My Review:

This was a relatively light and easy to follow story with a slowly developing romance between Dylan, a newly rehabbed and tattooed bad boy rock-star with his reputation in tatters; and Paige, the mousy, uptight, and generally overlooked yet anxious to please PR executive who was assigned to be his handler.  Paige worked in her father’s firm and her family was rather vile, yet they provided most of the comic relief.

If you have ever read a romance novel at any time in your life then, of course, you already know the outcome, yet the story was entertaining with a few delightfully naughty bits, and the characters were sweet and endearingly flawed.  Although, I was slow to fully warm up to Paige as she was initially rudely judgmental and inflexible.  I did not expect the former hard-partying man-ho rock-star to be the most level-headed, considerate, and thoughtful character in the book, but I adored the sweet and sexy Dylan.

Most girls/women have had a rock-star or famous actor fantasy or two - um thousand, yes, I will fess up… I’ll own it and wave my hands in the air like I do not care. While I don’t read rocker romances often, there are times I need something lighter in tone to break up the tedium or alleviate the residual heaviness from over-servings of angst or brain scrambling thrillers, and this sexy bad boy with a bad rep for fast living and hard partying came at a good time.  And well, it’s from Samantha Chase, nuff said.

The success of the Montgomery Brothers series has her working on six new titles in that collection as well as two new exciting series set to start popping up on bookshelves in 2015. You won't find her books with the erotica or paranormal titles, all of her works are pure contemporary romances.
