Book Review, Giveaway: At Her Own Risk by Rachael Duncan

Title: At Her Own Risk
Author: Rachael Duncan
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release: August 14, 2017

Sex.

That’s all it was supposed to be. No strings attached, no feelings, no heartache.

But if I thought Sean Riley would be content having only parts of me, I was dead wrong. His persistence wore me down and I found myself in the one situation I was trying to avoid.

Little does he know a life with me will lead to nothing but disappointment and heartbreak. He’s a good man and deserves everything I can’t give him. Not because I don’t want to, but because I’m unable.

Pushing him away in the beginning was to protect me, now I’m trying to protect him as I gear up for the fight of my life.

A fight I could lose.

Getting into a relationship was my risk, but as things get worse, I’m not the only one who will have something to lose.

I just hope it’s worth it.

Favorite Quotes:

I’m Ella’s favorite uncle… There aren’t a whole lot of guys who would perform the Frozen soundtrack for a fourteen-month-old with as much accuracy as me.

Scarlett is a serial dater. I don’t think I’ve seen any of her relationships last longer than a couple weeks. Her philosophy is if it’s not perfect in the beginning, it’s bound to be a disaster in the end.

It’s official; she’s castrated me and turned me into a chick. I’ve never second-guessed myself so much in my life…

The urge to look it up on my phone has my fingers twitching, but I know that’s a terrible idea. No matter what symptoms you have, the internet will always have you convinced it’s a tumor and you’re going to die.

You’ll be everything you are now, but more…. Because you’ll be a survivor.

Paige, you’re everything to me. You make air worth breathing, sights worth seeing, and life worth living.

My Review:

Paige was gun shy and skittish about relationships and gave the sweet, sexy, and tenacious Sean an extremely hard time.  Paige was a prickly character, hampered by excessive pride, terminal stubbornness, and a smart-ass attitude.  Her obstinacy was ridiculous and self-defeating.  But regardless, Sean was smitten and seemed practically obsessed with her, and as they had mutual friends, he continued to pursue her while being just a few steps back from junior stalker status.  She has acted disgusted and uninterested in his quips and pickup lines laced with crude and sexy innuendos, although she was similarly attracted.  Sean was adorable and while his lines were cheesy, they also made me smile.  Once Paige expelled the stick she had wedged up her behind, I enjoyed this couple immensely with their playful teasing, amusing banter, and their game of random facts and random questions.  Everything was going well until devastating news was received.

The storyline alternated between amusing and clever humor, sizzling sensual scenes, and an angst fest; so in essence, it was an emotive roller coaster - but well worth the ride.  Rachael Duncan has mad skills and provided an insightful, heart squeezing and engaging story.  I have enjoyed all the books in this series and look forward to many more, as there are several remaining friends to examine and dispatch to the land of happy ever after.

“Come back to me,” I finally plead.

She looks into my eyes and there’s so much pain I can’t stand it. “I don’t know how.” Her voice is strained as she tries to hold back the tears.

“Let me help you.” I cup her face and she leans into it.

“I just want to stop feeling this way and I can’t.” A tear falls down her cheek.

“Like what?”

She pauses and says, “Empty.”

Book Review, Giveaway: Risk and Reward by Rachael Duncan

Title: Risk and Reward
Author: Rachael Duncan
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: March 6, 2017

Grass isn't always greener...
DIVORCE.
I never dreamed this would become my reality.
But it is.
After feeling neglected and alone for far too long, I end it,
Blindsiding my husband in the process.
He's hurt, torn, and confused,
Never expecting me to leave.
His pain tears at my heart, begs me to stay.
And I almost do.
Almost.
Moving on isn't as easy as it seems.
The memories tap at my conscience,
Reminding me of what I'm missing,
What I used to have.
But, I walked away,
From the man I promised forever,
Possibly making the worst mistake of my life.
I've let go, given myself a promise of a new life, new hope.
But does the other side have more risk than reward?

Favorite Quotes:

Well, you’re kind of a man-eater.  I was wondering if you’d found another guy to sink your claws into since you ditched the last one… Don’t act offended.  You know you go through men faster than I change my underwear.

Picking at my nails to avoid their unrelenting stares, I feel like an animal in a zoo exhibit right now.

She’s one of those women that must have a pact with the devil.  There’s just no other explanation for how amazing she looks.

He told me I remind him of his big toe because he’s going to bang me on every piece of furniture in his house.

I like watching you sleep… Yep.  With your hair scattered everywhere, mouth hanging open, and drool coming out it, you’re the definition of beauty.

My Review:

Risk and Reward is my third Rachael Duncan experience, which if you are unfamiliar with her work, is like eating cheesecake, it’s an extremely pleasurable and addicting treat that disappears all too quickly yet leaves only happiness in its wake.  I was conflicted throughout the initial chapters of the book as to whether Charlotte was being hasty or making good choices.  Ms. Duncan weaves an excellent tale and lured me in quickly and held my attention and heart throughout.  Her plot was relatable, intriguing, and well constructed.  Written in first person POV, the story was well-paced, entertaining, cleverly amusing, sensual, and extremely engaging. I adored Nate, although - not at first.  I did not have a full appreciation of married Nate due to his benign neglect, but I adored the sweetness of dating Nate and the care and attentiveness of the new and improved Nate.  He was perfection.   I enjoyed these interesting and appealing characters and look forward to next one in the series.

It’s easy to recognize the bad when you’re in the moment. All the good is erased and you’re blinded by the negative. Each fight, every moment of hurt starts as a small scab. If taken care of, it’ll heal. But the more you pick, the worse it gets until it festers and infects everything. Is that what I let happen to my marriage? What if I had tried to fix my initial hurt instead of internalizing and letting it fester?
