New Release, Review: Letting Go of You by J.M. Witt

My Review:

I preface this review stating that I have followed this series since the beginning and totally enjoyed reading Letting Go, and generally enjoyed Hiding Away until the abrupt and despicable cliffhanger debacle. However, while reading Letting Go of You, I could not shake a pervading feeling of heaviness and discontent that seemed to permeate the story line. The characters seem to be in constant drama and struggle with each other, and only seem to sync during sex, which – no complaints here – was smoking hot! However, the story line grows increasingly moody and morose, and spirals down into dismal, dour, surly, and outright depressing. While the author’s skill continues to improve and the writing was good, I was frustrated and discouraged with the story line, and did not enjoy how it made me feel. I kept reading hoping it would turn around, yet it ended unresolved and with me feeling utterly morose. I felt absolutely gloomy at reaching the last page and realizing that was it… and that is not the resulting sensation I would seek out or chose to spend my scant free time doing. While I don’t always need a HEA, I read to be entertained… and don’t want to squander my energy on a book that leaves me feeling completely dissatisfied and totally annoyed. Though on one hand I would like to know what happens to the characters and hope they get a HEA… but think I will wait and see if the next book continues down this path of discontent before investing any more of my time and energy into this series.

My Review:

Writing a review for this book poses an extreme dilemma for me. The story pulled at my heartstrings with touching and exciting scenes of a moving and sexy new romance, and ping-pongs back and forth from discovering new love, to gut wrenching anxiety. The love scenes varied from sweet and tender, to hot and steamy - and I loved them all. There were moments when I could not read fast enough, and other moments when I actually could not catch my breath. Ms. Witt does an excellent job in conveying the full range of emotion and passion. I was a happy camper until - arg - a cliffhanger. I don't have enough polite words in my vocabulary to express my displeasure! Daresay, I am not a fan of this distressing trend. On the one hand, I feel emotionally invested and care about these characters, I want to know what happens to them. But on the other hand, I am resentful of the abrupt and dramatic ending. I felt much like I had been left dangling from the flag pole, in a short skirt, on a stormy day... raw and exposed. So, feeling as I do, can I recommend this novella to others? It IS an emotive story and merits a read, but I feel compelled to add this warning label - recommended for adults who like sensual romance and don't mind having their heart repeatedly constricted and inflamed, then forcibly removed for transplant, with no donor forthcoming for months on end. Grumble... grumble... but yes - I do recommend you buy it, read it, and whine to the author not to do this to us ever again!
