Growing up in the supersized shadow of a famous mother led Jules Capelli to retreat far from the glamorous lifestyle. She owns and runs Team Vino, a team-building operation based in a working vineyard. In the midst of a seminar, her high-profile, high-maintenance mother insists Jules shelter her among the vines after recent plastic surgery. Keeping the woman hidden will require a monumental effort, especially with two reporters from an entertainment magazine in the attendance.

Alex Dixon has known from the minute he checked into Team Vino for employer-mandated team training, that Jules is hiding something. Learning her secret is key, but he’s more interested in getting to know the appealing woman. Jules’s secret is a great distraction, but once discovered, making sure it remains hidden from his bottom-feeding co-worker is even more of a challenge.

Working together as a team, Jules and Alex discover a mutual attraction and a common goal . . . keep the secret, build a team, and uncover love among the vines.

Favorite Quotes:

Peyton swooped in for an air kiss, lips pursed in a smile as fake as her boobs, Botoxed brow frozen in place.

A shake of the head sent Peyton’s hair into motion. About the only thing on her head capable of moving.

My Review:

I am not sure how she does it, but Gemma Brocato consistently performs a magic act in providing the perfect balance of clever details, keen observations, amusing levity, and steamy love scenes folded perfectly into an engaging story. I ardently enjoy her brand of wordplay and entertaining snarky wit. Hidden in the Vines utilizes the same vineyard environment and staff as the first delightful book in this series, Romancing The Vine, with each book in the series featuring a different couple and capable to stand-alone. I have relished all the main and secondary characters in this series, as well as their colorful descriptions and inner musings. Jules was previously known as “The Ugly Duckling” teenage daughter of a vain and self-involved actress, ten years later she was using a different name and running a successful business, but remained as leery of the hateful press as she was of her demanding and narcissistic mother. Alex was an anomaly among the entertainment journalism industry as he had managed to retain a bit of integrity and empathy for the potential victims and collateral damage caused by the sensational exposés of the industry.   What were the chances of retaining her secret with a reporter attending her vineyard program at the same time as her mother?

Gemma’s favorite desk accessories for many years were a circular wooden token, better known as a ’round tuit,’ and a fortune from a fortune cookie proclaiming her a lover of words; someday she’d write a book. All it took was a transfer to the United Kingdom, the lovely English springtime, and a huge dose of homesickness to write her first novel. Once it was completed and sent off with a kiss even the rejections, addressed to ‘Dear Author’, were gratifying.

After returning to America, she spent a number of years as a copywriter, dedicating her skills to making insurance and the agents who sell them sound sexy. Eventually, her full-time job as a writer interfered with her desire to be a writer full-time and she left the world of financial products behind to pursue an avocation as a romance author.
Her gamble paid off when she was a 2012 Finalist in the prestigious Golden Pen contest for Romantic Suspense and she received contracts for her first and second book.

“Why did they all walk away? All those people. Surely someone was more qualified than us to help that poor man.” Nia’s voice was muffled against his shoulder. The warmth of her hands oozed into his pecs, triggering a heated response in his groin. Her body snuggled tightly to his was about the only thing that seemed right in the world.
“Who knows? Tonight kind of proves my theory that there isn’t any good left in the world. People are absorbed in their own lives. They don’t care about what is going on around them.” He tightened his grip around her waist.
“You can’t possibly believe that. What about people volunteering for charities? What about all those random acts of kindness the media likes to report?”
God, he wished he could believe in those things. He rested his hands on the small of her back. “When was the last time you actually read or heard about someone doing anything altruistic? Even the charities you mentioned are only really in it for the money.”
She leaned away and gazed into his eyes. “That’s an awfully jaded view of the world, Thomas.”
“I’ve seen too much pain and suffering. In my own family and others. Human kindness is as much of a myth as the Loch Ness monster.”
“Actually, Nessie isn’t myth at all. He’s one of Poseidon’s offspring condemned to the loch for some infraction eons ago.” A shock of her sunny red hair flopped over her brow as she shook her head. A grin spread across her face. “That’s it. I’m officially on a mission to enlighten you about the goodness of human nature.”
“You’re welcome to try.” He slanted a kiss across her smiling lips, probed them with his tongue.
She slid her arms around his neck, stretching up on her toes. Her breasts pressed to his chest stirred him. His cock jumped to life. Gathering her closer, he pressed the curve of her buttocks, increasing the contact between her hips and his. He didn’t care if she’d become aware of the depth of his attraction to her. Or that the attraction he felt to her happened this fast, or was more powerful than anything he’d ever experienced. Days. They’d known each other only a handful of days, and already, he wanted more with her.
The fact was—he was enthralled by the feel of her body, the press of her lips, the glide of her tongue against his. He let go the residual negativity left by the accident, and the crowd’s response. Sinking into the kiss with this gorgeous woman warmed his heart and soul.
He opened his lips on hers and stroked his tongue into the warm cave of her mouth. He backed up until his shoulders contacted the rough bark of a massive, old oak tree. Tightening his grip around her waist, he spun them in a half circle until he had her sandwiched between the tree and his body. The kiss deepened until it bordered on voracious. He was hungry for her in a way he hadn’t been hungry for a woman in a long time. There was no denying he wanted this woman. In his arms…in his bed. In his life.

Excerpt for TYRANNY (Goddess of Delphi Book 1)

God knew, he’d worked for years to get the bureaucratic idiots to hear his ideas. He could have circumvented the problem long ago if he’d been able to make the right people listen. The government’s idea of a diplomatic solution only served to edge the world closer to a massive war. “I couldn’t convince anyone to consider the logical alternative, a negotiated settlement where the Bulgarian people are protected. There is no stopping the Five Nations.” The statement alone made his gut churn.

“There has to be.” Clio rose from her seat, moved to her desk, and retrieved a scrap of paper. With graceful movements, she returned to his side. She handed him the document. “You need to read this. It will change your mind.”

Battling the skepticism that had been his hallmark since he’d left GeoPoly, he took the sheet from her hand. It was an e-mail. The chilling message mentioned destruction, war, and an end to mankind. “Who is this Pierus?”

“He’s a demi-god who thought his nine daughters were better than the daughters of Zeus, my sisters and me.” The corners of her mouth lifted slightly. “Zeus is never nice when he’s pissed off. He turned Pierus’s daughters into magpies. Pierus has been seeking to restore them ever since.”

“Whoa! Zeus is your dad? Like, Zeus Zeus? God of Gods, Zeus?” Okay, his world shifted from I can handle her as a Muse to what the fuck have I gotten myself into? He shook his head in denial but then recalled the sight of the bird this morning, and more recently outside Clio’s bedroom window.

“The same. Anyway, Pierus resurfaced recently and challenged us to a contest to return his brats to human form. It’s his version of a hostile takeover of Olympus. He wins, and he gets dominion over all immortals. And his daughters would be unleashed on humanity.” Clio shuddered. “The effect on mortals will be dire. They’ll live up to their names, like Tyranny, Strife, Mayhem. You get the idea.”

“Can he do it?” Aw, shit. That sounded like he was a believer. And maybe, just maybe…

Clio frowned. “He can if we fail at the challenge he’s set for us.”

“Have any of you failed?”

She shrugged. “I’m the first.”

“His message says one Muse, one man. How do you know I’m the man?”

“The magpies keep appearing. You mentioned a run in with a crazy old man and a bird. I believe that was Pierus. The other night in the library when it was storming so badly, I spied the image of Pierus and his skanky daughter in a flash of lightning.” She shook her head again. “Tonight when we walked past the street musician, that was Pierus in disguise.”

The dotted line from his run-in with the bird to Clio’s story just filled in like a solid fucking black dart.

Excerpt

Relief pulsed through her as Jules mentioned Luke had arrived. No offense to the insurance guys, but she was worn out with what little interaction she’d had with them. Jac paid scant attention to the conversation flowing around her as she sipped her wine. Nerves chased through her stomach at the idea of working for a week with Bella’s ideal of male perfection.

Footsteps echoed near the doorway to the dining area only an instant before the owner of them walked through.

She’d been instantly smitten with the man when Bella had introduced her to him last month. The attraction blossomed to life again. Luca Rossi was panty-dropping, ovary-exploding handsome. Bella’s nickname for him was well deserved. Luscious Luke, indeed. His short, dark brown hair curled and waved as if it had a mind of its own. Bright, inquisitive eyes didn’t seem to miss anything as he glanced around the room. His gaze slid past her, lighted on Jules, who remained standing next to her, then returned to Jac’s face.

A slow, sexy grin tugged the corners of his mouth. A faint shadow of stubble emphasized more than hid his square jaw. It was a strong face . . . perfect in the way it was put together.

Conversation around her faded into the background. Jac forgot to breathe for a second. A wave of dizziness swept over her. And, no, a lack of oxygen wasn’t the cause. Uh-uh, it had to be due to being this close to a living, breathing Roman god. Or because he continued to stare at her. He lifted a brow over gorgeous blue-green eyes and his smile broadened, allowing even white teeth to peek between full lips.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Luca Rossi was panty-dropping, ovary-exploding handsome. Bella’s nickname for him was well deserved. Luscious Luke indeed.

Thank goodness she wouldn’t have to be the lady lawyers’ walking hemorrhoid for the rest of the week, unwanted and most unwelcome…

Jac shoved her hands under her thighs to keep from applauding Sally’s sudden outburst. The woman could stop looking for a spine donor. She’d grown one all by herself.

A glance around the table confirmed Luke’s theory that most everyone present thought Brian Evert was nothing more than a dick with ears.

My Review:

This is my second Gemma Brocato read and for the life of me - I don’t know why I haven’t read more of her work. Of the two books I have -perused, she appears to write my favorite type of book - sweet, sexy, clever, low angst, smartly written, and packed with endearingly flawed characters, amusing banter, and an entertaining storyline. What is there NOT to love about a book like that? The main characters were both teeth-grinding and driven workaholics who had casually met through a friend and shared an instant and mutual attraction. Unfortunately, they did not meet up again for another month until they both found themselves at a work-sponsored retreat for team building. Timing is everything and sparks flew suddenly and freely, until an all-consuming and volcanically hot passion erupted. Instant and meaningful connections were made that deepened by the minute. But then - work priorities interfered, conflicts and uncertainty over their individual careers and bonehead bosses got in the way… plans were derailed and then a complete overhaul was required. However, their connection never wavered. I adore this type of sweet, supportive, and sexy story with a satisfying HEA. Lesson learned - I need to read more Gemma Brocato books.
