Book Review: Why It’s Real by S. Moose & C.A. Harms

Why It’s Real

by S. Moose & C.A. Harms

Amazon US / UK / AU / CA

No matter how hard you try to put your past behind you, it always manages to catch up with you and make you question your decisions. Those unexpected events that leave you feeling as though there’s nowhere to turn, nothing can change the outcome.

Aimee's life hasn't always been easy. She made a choice a long time ago to make a difference. She wanted to prove to those who doubted her that she was strong and could survive anything. The youngest in her firm, she was made partner, and her life was exactly as she wanted it to be.
Or was it?

Remy was strong and confident. He lived a life most men would die for. Dominating the corporate world during the day and partying with socialites at night, he had everything he needed.
Or so he thought.

One changing moment.
One drastic decision.

Together, would they truly be able to discover why it’s real?

I’m worried. A man packing a woman’s bag with what he feels is deemed necessary can only lead to disaster.

My Review:

I struggled, and valiantly I might add, but this story just wasn’t my cup of Darjeeling as it was a full-on angst fest with painful and OTT wallowing, and angst is not, and will never be, my friend. As such, the first 30% was bordering on torture, but that was nothing compared to the tragedies that later befell the deeply mired characters and tossed the story into a listless stall. Sigh, the storylines were heaving with devastation, loss, family dysfunction, depression, and keening grief. However, I was rewarded for making it to the end as the satisfying HEA that was all the sweeter.

Book Review: Gravitate (Brooklet Dreams #3) by C.A. Harms

Gravitate
(Brooklet Dreams #3)
by C.A. Harms

Amazon US / UK / AU / CA / B&N

I was the ultimate bachelor. I enjoyed my wild life, the late nights, and the fact that I had no commitments. My job and my freedom were all I needed.

Or so I thought.

Chloe was sweet and kind, and the way she got so flustered in my presence was adorable. That smile of hers did things to a man. And her laugh? It was infectious.

She had this gravitating pull that was irresistible.

She was younger, sweeter, and too innocent for a guy like me. But none of that mattered because she also possessed the power to make any man want things he’d never really given himself a chance to even think about.

But there was one thing that held me back. One thing that made me question the feelings I held for her.

She was my best friend’s cousin.

To make matters worse, she had an army of men around her that were ready to defend her if needed. And let me tell you, being on the opposite end of that line was enough to make any sane man pause.

But the more time I spent time with her, the faster all the reasons I should hold back disappeared.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, but a woman who was suffering from rejection and humiliation, well, that was a dangerous combination. We could be vindictive, and yes, even overdramatic, but how was I supposed to look at him and not remember…

Needing her full attention, I committed the sin of all sins in a woman’s kitchen, and I grabbed the spoon and bowl from her hands. When her mouth fell open and she narrowed her eyes at me, I knew I better speak fast or run.

Margie was the town gossip; anything she’d heard, she added to it and told it to anyone who would stop long enough to listen. The object of the game was to be polite but never offer any bits of information that were not necessary.

There was no denying it. Even Grace herself understood how wound up she was… Each of us all gave her advice on how to scratch the itch. I had a feeling if this all kept up, whomever the man was that finally got past her guards, she’d end up killing them by sexual exhaustion.

My Review:

C.A. Harms has a devoted fangirl for life, as I adore her clever brand of snark, wit, and sizzling style. The storylines were original with emotive tones that were equal parts sweet, angsty, amusing, and steamy. This was an engaging and well-balanced tale that frequently had me smirking and/or turning up the fan and seeking out liquids for re-hydration. Although he was somewhat clueless, this installment to the series featured a sexy fireman/construction worker packed with muscles. Swoon, sign me up to volunteer for their next fundraiser. No wonder his loony-tunes stalker couldn’t stay away.

Book Review: Paradox (Pearson Sisters Series Book 1) by C.A. Harms

Paradox
(Pearson Sisters Series Book 1)
by C.A. Harms

Amazon US / UK / AU / CAB&N

Pretending had always been so easy for Shane...until Janelle moved in next door.

Janelle was excited to be starting a brand new chapter in her life. But her eagerness quickly plummeted when her new neighbor stormed over with his arrogance and attitude. And now, just the sight of him made her blood boil.

Just as she thought she knew exactly what kind of man Shane Anderson was, he blindsided her and left her speechless.

Turns out, she didn’t know him at all...

She quickly realized that the man he pretended to be was nothing more than a Paradox

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

She gets a little more aggressive when she has a few drinks in her. The mention of castration, disembowelment, and roasting his nuts over an open flame made us laugh during dinner, yes, but now I am honestly a little afraid for the guy.

“Do you think he’s gay?” My smile falters. “Who knows?” It is hard to distinguish between the two voices. “What I do know is no matter if he prefers the bratwurst or the bun, he needs to get laid.”

“I have an entire list of things that would inflict great pain on any man that I am dying to try if the need should arise.”… She can’t be more than one hundred pounds soaking wet, but something tells me she means every word.

I used to think Mom dropped you on your head as a child and that I couldn’t be mean to you because that was not your fault. But now I can’t blame Mom. You became this warped and confused version of yourself all on your own.

Did she honestly try to pull a bone and bolt on you?

My Review:

This tragic and heart-squeezing tale was poignantly penned while well-balanced in tone with amusing and provocative wit, sizzling sensuality, and vibrant characters. Ms. Harm’s emotive writing captivated my interest, tapped all the feels, tugged at the heartstrings, and sent her flawed and struggling characters straight to the heart where they burrow deeply into my coronary muscle. I adored each quirky primary and secondary character and am eagerly looking forward to more Pearson adventures.

Book Review: Just Breathe Again by C.A. Harms

Just Breathe Again
by C.A. Harms

Amazon US / UK / AU / CA / B&N

I had it all. Truly, I had the perfect life. One filled with happiness and love where the bright smiles of my gorgeous wife and my beautiful daughter greeted me every day. I was a lucky man…

Until I lost it all.

Sometimes, when I close my eyes, I can still see them. My two angels still shining with their never-ending beauty. But those visions always lead me to darkness…

The moment when I find myself alone again. The pain is real and the emptiness inside me only grows with each passing day.

Time will heal me, they say. But they’ve never lived through the loss I have. They’ve never felt the excruciating pain of what it means to have your heart shattered into a million pieces.

They don’t know the guilt I carry.

Sometimes I wonder why I even bother waking up every morning. But if I let go, I let go of them. And their memory is all I have left.

I know I need to move on. I know it’s time to Just Breathe Again…

The problem is I didn’t know where to start.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

I wanted to be able to breathe without feeling guilty that I still could.

Mary Jane Kleiber was on her third husband and fifth kid. She always did say she was going to find a man to take care of her. I guess the income of child support and divorce settlements was the route she chose.

Somehow, telling my mother that the sweet man she was referring to had devoured me with deep penetrating kisses only forty-eight hours ago then dismissed me like yesterday’s garbage didn’t sound like such a great idea.

You forget that this is a small town and that people talk. You can’t buy nonfat yogurt from the market without every person in town gossiping about how it’s about time you notice your ass has gotten bigger.

She would tell me that when I smiled at her, it made her tummy tickle.

My Review:

This book just wasn’t my preferred cup of Darjeeling. I struggled, valiantly I must add, as I have read and enjoyed several books by this author and knew eventually she would pull the depressed and wallowing character’s cranium from his rectum, but alas, it took far too long for my taste. I am no fan of constant conflict, repetitive cycles, or high angst, and unfortunately, that would describe 80% of this story.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it was poorly written, it wasn’t. My rating is purely a reflection of my personal satisfaction, and regrettably, this book fell short of my definition of enjoyable entertainment. While there were still things I did enjoy such as an interesting premise, dual POV, and eventual sweet and steamy HEA; Ms. Harms clever trademark humor made only scant appearances and not only did she deploy several of my highest ranking pet peeves in her storylines, she did so repeatedly. I was not a happy camper and experiencing an escalating level of exasperation and sighing with displeasure and high dudgeon until I neared the 85% mark when my mood vastly improved with that long-awaited skull extraction and sudden bursts of sweet romance and sensual steam which culminated into a fond HEA to save the day.

Book Review: Captivate (Brooklet Dream #2) by C.A. Harms

Captivate
 (Brooklet Dream #2)
by C.A. Harms

Amazon US / UK / AU / CA / B&N

I was back in Brooklet Georgia and things were far from how they were when I left years ago.

Maddison used to be one of the guys, but that was definitely not the case anymore...

She had changed and damn if it didn’t make my heart race. With each passing second she began to consume me. Her smile made my knees weak and the way she looked at me took my breath away.

She captivated me, but she was forbidden. She was the one girl I had no right to crave.

Things became messy, and fast, but to hell with the consequences...she was worth it.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Trouble never looked so good.

This entire thing has been so that you can prove that you hold the upper hand in this relationship… Truth is you’ve always had the power over me… Damn, Mad, you’ve always been the one girl I could never say no to… I’m at your mercy. You could crush me, though I hope you never will.

I’m eighteen and still a virgin. I’ve never even kissed a guy unless you count little Jimmy Jones slobbering on my cheek in the fifth grade. But even then, Rhett threatened to beat him up when he found out, and he and my daddy have made sure no other boy has come within a foot of me since. At this rate, they’ll be doing a remake of the 40 Year Old Virgin, starring yours truly.

I felt for the girl, I truly did, because Reed and Rhett were for sure gonna drive her insane for years and years to come. But the guy had my most sympathy; I just hoped whoever she ended up with, he was strong enough to survive.

My Review:

Angst and conflict are not my friends - I find them extremely tiresome. As such, the first half of this book was a tedious slog for me, but it was worth it to get to all the good stuff found in the second half. I was just about to give up when the stubborn girl finally stopped playing games and regained her facility for sassy and mischievous taunting. Thank the goddess of ink, I was growing increasingly concerned that Ms. Harms had lost her mojo, but she redeemed herself with delicious slices of sizzle and playful levity. Written in my favorite dual POV, the storylines evolved slowly with many of the same lively cast of irreverent and endearing characters found in Allure. Mike was simply delectable.

Book Review: Fall (Montgomery Men #3) by C.A. Harms

Fall
(Montgomery Men #3)
by C.A. Harms

Amazon US / UK / AU / CA

Knoxville Montgomery liked things his way. He kept everything simple and he was always in control. That is until a head-strong blonde stumbled into his life and changed everything. She became a challenge he refused to walk away from.

It didn’t matter how much Knoxville tried, Tinley would not give into him. She couldn’t. On the outside, she appeared to be resilient and untouchable, but her reality was a much different story.

But Knoxville would not give up. Little by little, he started to tear down her walls, and at that moment, Tinley knew. Even though she fought it with every, single fiber in her body, their outcome was fated.

She would Fall…
And all she could do now was hope he’d be willing to catch her.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

Lexington Russell is my brother’s secretary, best friend to Kinsley and Shanelle, and the biggest fan of the Montgomery men. The last part was no fucking joke. Lex loved us, as in loved to get us riled up, flustered, and half-naked. Again, no fucking joke. The guy was a menace.

“I can assure you, I am not pleasant company… I’m moody and cranky at least eighty -two percent of the day.” “How about the remaining eighteen?” “I’m asleep.”

“Fancy to me is using real silverware instead of plastic.” The sad part is, I wasn’t joking.

“I don’t need you to set us up, because I’m confident I can do that on my own. I’m pretty terrific after all. I just need a chance to get him alone.” I suddenly feel a little bad for Greg. “I know a homosexual man when I see one, and he is in fact into men. If I have things my way, he’ll be into me.” Lexington wags his brows suggestively, as if I didn’t already catch on to his little innuendo.

My Review:

I was unfamiliar with the Montgomery Men series but that didn’t seem to matter as I had no problem comprehending the story, although after reading this installment I am more than eager to pick up the first two as I am already enamored with the entire family and am quite certain I would enjoy the earlier books as much as I did Knox’s story in Fall.  Knox was a sweet treat, a sexy, fiercely protective, and thoughtful man who seemed to have the patience of a saint.  He was magnetically attracted to lovely Tinley, who didn’t put of encouraging vibes, at all.  Tinley had shut herself down following a traumatic attack the previous year and was a difficult and prickly pear to even converse with.  Knox enjoyed the challenge as much as her snark and barbs, and gradually won her over one inch at a time.  The writing was full of sizzle and sassy humor while the storylines were engaging, easy to follow, interesting, well-paced, and cast with highly appealing and well-matched characters.  C.A. Harms has been a recent discovery for me starting with her Oh Tequila series, but I have greatly enjoyed each and every one of books I that I have had the pleasure to peruse.

Book Review: Just One Kiss (Oh Tequila #4) by C.A. Harms

Just One Kiss
(Oh Tequila #4)

by C.A. Harms

What do you get when you mix Tequila with a house full of rowdy Fraternity brothers who have no boundaries? A cucumber, a pink thong, and a bottle of lube. Oh yeah, and super glue. There is always super glue…

Parties, drinking, and plenty of mornings where you can’t remember what you did the night before...that was my life.

Yet, there was one memory that lingered in my mind. Ten minutes in the woods with Palmer that got too intense to ignore.

But ten minutes with her wasn’t enough. It would never be enough.

She’s a force, one that swept in unexpectantly, knocked me on my ass and left me with an intense craving. Palmer tried to fight it with every fiber in her being, but I could see the desire in her eyes. That curiosity that lived inside of her, wondering what it would be like if she just gave in...again.

I had to convince her that our time together wasn’t a mistake. That she wants me as much as I want her. We share a connection, a bond, that has changed me in ways I never expected. She saved me. And to think…

It all started with Just One Kiss.

My Rating:

Favorite Quotes:

You confuse the hell out of me, and if I attempted to figure you out, half the time I would walk away with a migraine.

Seconds, that’s all it would have taken between life and death.

Please, Corbin, don’t be this version of you.

My Review:

Revenge pranks take on a whole new level with this unwieldy crew. I was totally unprepared for Corbin, who was a major player and rather clownish, to have such a sweet and tender heart. His downward spiral was heartbreaking yet Ms. Harms kept the tone well-balanced with her own special blend of raucous levity, sensuality, and earthy observations. The feisty characters were endearing and enticing, the storylines were lively and well constructed, and the writing was magnetic, captivating, and hard to put down. Narrated in my favorite dual POV, Ms. Harms cleverly tapped all the feels more than once and kept me smirking with her playful smart-assery.

Book Review: Deception by C.A. Harms

Deception
by C.A. Harms

Deception: The act of deceiving someone.

That became a pattern in my life. It was the way the chips fell. I'm destined to be that girl that fell for the wrong guy. If he was a liar and a cheat, I found him or he found me. It didn’t really matter how it happened, it just always did.

But when I met Jake, I thought he was different. He was just a guy trying to get by, much like me in a sense. He was happy with the little things in life...he made me feel safe and settled.

That was until I found out that his name, his life, and the man he pretended to be, were nothing but a fraud. He used me to get the answers he needed, and in the process, he managed to take my last ounce of hope and crush it.

I just wanted him gone. I wanted to forget the times we shared, the laughs we had. I wanted to ignore the fact that he’d so easily found a place in my heart.

Only there was one problem... I wasn’t allowed to forget.

I am reminded daily of him. Each morning, I have no choice but to look into the same, beautiful eyes he possessed. I see his smile, and that same shade of dark melted chocolate hair that at one point, I loved running my fingers through.

Every single day I reminded of the fact that the father of my child is nothing more than a man that truly never existed.

My Rating:

Favorite Quote:

I would have waited a lifetime to hear those words, but I’m glad I didn’t have to.

My Review:

While I haven’t read her entire body of work, of those books that I have read I have concluded that C.A. Harms excels in writing highly engaging and poignant NA romances with generous helpings of angst, scorching sensual steam, and irreverent and highly amusing humor. This observation continues forward although her current book was considerably lighter on the humor and heavier on the angst than her more recent offerings. While I often feel exasperated with an over-serving of angst and conflict, I adored Deception anyway, although I seem to be pouting some over her neglect of my appetite for comedic balance; I’m sure she will make it up to me in the near future.
