Book Review:

In life we all know we are give choices. We hear about them all the time. How they make or break us, how sometimes there's only one right choice and other times any choice you make can be right as long as it's what you truly want. We thrive from the idea we are able to make our own choices and in the end we have to be happy with what we made because at the time it was what we wanted. No one ever talks about the idea that you have a choice after death, or should I say the in between.

In If I Stay our main character Mia has an important choice to make. Should she move on and let go of her ties to this plane, or should she stay. There's not much waiting for her on earth, but if she does have the choice would she make the right one? That's what she contemplates as she watches things play out before her. 

I loved the way the story is told. We see things as they happen to Mia, we're there with her as she watches loved ones waiting and praying for her. Yet, we're not just there. We go with her as she travels back to her memories, and we learn about her life. We learn who she is, who she isn't, where she may go and where she's coming from. Mia is by far my favorite character in this book, not because she's main the character but because of who she is. She doesn't try to be anything she isn't, she is who she is. She's insecure, she's smart, she's a fantastic cellist, and above all she's a teenager who has to make a tough choice no one should ever have to make. 

As I read this book, I went with Mia through it all. I went with her as she was with Adam, Kim, her parents. I laughed at some parts, I sniffled at others. This book is as fantastic as I've heard it would be and I'm sad I'm getting to it now. The only thing I didn't like was the use of some of the larger vocabulary. At times it seemed to me some of the words didn't fit in, I don't mean definition wise but phrase wise. As though the word didn't work in the way the sentence was constructed. This wasn't for all the words but there were time where I felt it disrupted the way the sentences flowed and my reading. 

All in all this book was a fantastic read. Great characters, great plot, and it's really made me think since I began reading it to the end.

My Review:

This may be the sixth book in the series, but it is my second read from the Alicia Rae Beautiful series.  Another sweet story of finding love when those involved are not looking for it, expecting it, or even aware they needed it.  Swoon, I am totally besotted with Blake, although admittedly, I know such a man is a total fantasy as he is really just too good to be true.  I appreciate and enjoy the fact that her books are stand-alone volumes, yet we continue to hear about some of the characters from previous books.  Her writing is easy to follow, heartfelt, and serves up some steam to go with those hunky heroes – all of which I find ever so tasty.

 “Emily, I know that you’re out for blood but let’s face it, you don’t have the means to get a woman like Charlette Delacroix,” Shane informed me as I placed around my complex, trying to figure out how I would pay that bitch back for trying to kill me. 

She obviously believed that offing me would get her Julien but she was sadly mistaken. The look on his face when I told him that Charlette had been the one who attacked me at the club was one I would never forget. He was furious. Unfortunately his expression soon changed to one of brokenness when I ended my relationship with him.

It was the hardest thing I had ever been forced to do. I felt like I had no choice. The woman was clearly desperate and would stop at nothing to get Julien to leave me for her. I needed her to believe she had won, to believe that she had successfully caused our demise. But in order to do that I had to hurt the man I loved so desperately. I had to allow him to feel broken yet again and the idea that I caused him such hurt pained me to the core but it was the only way. I needed to find a way to get Charlette out of our lives once and for all. 

“You think I don’t know that Shane? Do you really think it hasn’t crossed my mind that I am dealing with sick twisted fuck that will stop at nothing to take Julien away from me? His fucking wife!” I growled in his general direction as I continued my pacing. I needed a plan. 

“Well will you at least sit down and eat something. You’ve only been out of the hospital for ten hours and you really should be resting,” he said as he closed the short distance between us before drawing me up his is arms in an attempt to offer comfort. 

The resemblance between the brothers was remarkable and in that moment, I gasped at the sudden closeness and felt my stomach churn at the realization that Julien wouldn’t be able to touch me like this until after Charlette was taken care off.

Pushing away from Shane I signed and sat on the couch, allowing my head to fall into my hands. My decision to let Julien go at the hospital seemed rational at the time but the more I thought about it the more I wondered just what I was thinking. Shane was right. I had no way of really removing his ex-wife from our lives. Current wife, not ex? 

Tears welded up in my eyes in an instant as the severity of the situation crashed down on me with its full force. I was no position to take on Charlette. 

 Shane once again closed the distance between us before kneeling down in front of me, “Look, I know you are determined to make this woman pay. To be honest, I’d like to see the old bat pay myself but you are in way over your head,” he began before lifting my face with his hand to meet his gaze. “My bother loves you Emily, together you can stop Charlette. But if you insist on going after her I will help you. Fuck, I have money to blow and damn-it I can’t stand to see a woman cry. Especially since my brother would likely kill me if I allowed you to get into danger. So what do you say?” 

 What do I say? Did he really have to ask? 

“Fuck yeah!” I screamed as I jumped into his arms, no doubt squeezing the life out of him. 

“Whoa, whoa. Slow down killer, we still need a plan. Between your fucking determination and my pockets, Charlette should be out of your life soon and my brother will be happy again.” 

I didn’t let up on his neck, instead I squeezed tighter grateful that I had called him to get me out of the hospital since my friends weren’t speaking to me. Truth be told… I wanted to be close to Julien and Shane was the closest thing I had to him. 

“Thank you so much Shane, you have no idea how much this means to me,” I hiccupped into his neck, my grip no less tighter than before. 

“I am a lover at heart. Shit I’m French remember?” he chuckled softly. 

 How could I ever forget? I thought to myself.

Why did you decide to write a sequel, PRE-quel? Besides the fact that I don’t think 99.9% of the things I do through? Well, the fact is, A Broken Us was a story in my head that I was aching to tell. I was ready to write it! So I did…in like two weeks. It was madness. It’s is an epic love story that begins when Brody and Finley are already many years into a relationship. But of course (title gives it away here), the story starts with a break up. So it’s about Finley’s journey to finding true love again. So it still reads like a wonderful, suspenseful, twisty, turny stand-alone love story! So, I released it. And it has been AWESOME hearing how much people love it! The reviews are amazing. It’s my debut novel, I’m incredibly proud of it. 

Then what happened? Then this weird voice in the back of my head (that sounded NOTHING like Gollum from Lord of the Rings, I swear) kept saying…college, college, COLLEGE. Go back to college! Write their back-story. Give me more! What happened with Jake and Olivia? What was Brody and Finley’s first date like? All of that! I wanted to tell it. So that’s why I decided to write a PREQUEL. 

So what book should readers read first? Either one. That’s the beauty of writing A Broken Us first…you’re most definitely not missing anything in A Broken Us, because “anything” wasn’t even written yet! If that makes sense. Both books will be great as stand alones. You can start with A Broken Us and then jump right in to Becoming Us. I’ll still include twists and turns and suspense and excitement. Heartbreak. The whole nine. I love it all! 

Which story was easier to write? A Broken Us…for sure. The idea just poured out of me. Becoming Us has been a bit more challenging, only because I’ve had to become younger in my mind. Writing Brody and Finley in the New Adult genre needs to sound a bit different than when they were 25 in A Broken Us. But it’s all still fun! 

What’s next for you? I’m going to finish up my memoir series, Chasing Peace, the SEQUEL (I did that one right…LOL!) to Chasing Hope. Then I have spin off book ideas/characters in mind for A Broken Us! Hint, hint…Leslie & Theo….and of course, the sexy Liam!
